I don't ever want my kids to think the world revolves around them. Anyhow I am thinking of having of all of us help out on one day a week at a local food pantry. Previously we would visit people at the assited living in my town.

What can I do next?

Last year I got together with a bunch of friends and their kids and we "adopted" a single mother with her two children for Christmas. It was good for my boys to be able to help pick out clothes and toys for children that maybe wouldn't have got them for Christmas. Also, since we are not well to do, it was great to have other friends involved as well, that way we were able to give her a GREAT Christmas and everyone spent about $50!
Also, I don't know if you have them in your area, I volunteered in a Gift Room at our local food bank. I am not sure if I will do that again this year since I will be about 38 weeks prego! But, I really enjoyed being able to help folks that weren't able to afford gifts pick out a couple for their children.

If you can commit to something year round, what about delivering meals on wheels? Your kids can bring pictures they colored or crafts they made or songs they learned to some older people that need a smile year round. You could also adopt an "angel" off the tree at a mall and let your family shop for gifts for the angel child. I let each of my kids pick an angel and select the gifts.

LOVe this thread of ideas. I guess it depends on age of child. We buy a gift for a child in need, I have one of my kids help pick out and wrap so it is a hands on thing. when our town has a Holiday Walk with open stores and carolers etc our church has volunteers dress up as the Holy Family and sit in a stable complete with animals from the 4 H groups
