We're going to be needing a new vehicle and I have to transport five children 4 yrs old and younger. They will all need car seats. One maybe two can be in boosters. What is big enough to hold all these? Is my only option a full sized van? Let me know what you folks with large families do.

What can I do next?

I have a 2005 Pontiac Montana van that I think you could fit 3 seats in the 3rd row. The middle row has the kids size 2 seats and a large console. The console is removable so I could have kids walk through the middle seats to get to the back without having to fold anything down. I know the 3rd row has 3 shoulder belts for any kids back there. Also the montana looks less like a mini van and more like a mini van on steroids. A little more built up like a SUV but better mileage. Good luck.

I am currently an owner of a Dodge Durango with a third row seat and we are expecting number three. This car would be perfect however you cant easliy put kids in the third row with out taking a carseat out of the middle folding down the seat and putting it back. It is very unpractical!!! you can fit three carseats in the middle however we have two Britax and they are bigger so to put one in the middle of the two is impossible. I would steer clear of this vehicle as far as good easy function because if you are strapping kids into the back it is almost impossible with permenent carseats in the middle, unless they are old enough to crawl over the seats and buckle themselves. Which would end up to be a mess when its snowy or rainy or muddy!! We are going to a van, just for the practical side of it and its easy for lots of kids. Lots of people dont want to go to the "MINI VAN" because its a van but my MIL has one and I borrow it all the time!! Way more functional!!

We have the 2008 Honda Odyssey and I easily fit 5 kids in cars seats into the van (my kids plus the neighbors when I babysit). I love it!

Hi B.,
I am a daycare mom too! I do school drops and have a Durango with the third row seat. I have 4 in carseats and 1 in a booster. Works pretty well, I am a little bit anti minivan. We did rent a Toyota Siena minivan on vacation and that had room for 6 in the back, 8 total. If I were to buy a minivan I would choose that one. But I do love my Durango.

We had some friends who had a Ford Freestyle with the third row backseat that they just love. And they've been out since 2005, so a used one won't break the bank. I think the crossovers (SUV looking on a "car" wheelbase) also get a bit better gas mileage than the Tahoes etc. Good luck with your decision!

There are lots of cars that can handle 5 carseats. We have a minivan that will seat 7.... and while Its not the coolest, its the most practical, and its a NICE van, and I do like it.

Ford has the Freestyle, Dodge Durango, Chevy suburban, Chevy Tahoe, Buick Acadia, Honda Pilot... there are alot. Just cruise car dealerships to see what you like, and go from there.

BUT since you'll be having kids in the back all the time, I would look for something with easy in and easy out so that you aren't hoisting kids over the middle seat, they aren't climbing over other kids, and that there is room in the back for not only the carseats, but thier legs, and room to get in/out.

I work for the Denny Hecker Automotive group and I would be happy to help you into a vehicle which will accommodate all the car seats you need. please feel free to contact me I am quite sure I can help you find something other then a full size van which will work for you. I believe, and we can test to make sure, a Tahoe, Suburban or similar SUV with a third row and second row bench seat will work for you. The ease of getting the kids in and out will vary. We could try out some vehicles to see what is easiest to use and easiest on your budget. please contact me ____@____.com we can arrange for you to come in our we can bring vehicles to you!

I have a Ford Windstar and I can fit 5 carseats into it, depending on the type of seat.

In my back row I can fit 2 convertibles and 1 booster or 1 convertible and 2 boosters, and I am sure I could fit 3 boosters in. Then the middle row is 2 seats, so just 2 of whatever variety. I currently have a convertible (my son's) and then I fold down the other seat to get the back row kids in and out, and since I have an infant during school pick up time 2 days a week, I strap her carseat in with the seatbelt. As my enrollment changes, I will need a convertible in that seat, so I will just need to re-install it each trip. I use the Costco seats and they are super easy and quick to get in and out, and then I can still fold down that seat to get the other kids in and out.
