Hi Moms,

It's nearing the time for me to start making baby food and would like to know where the best places are to get quality fruits and vegetables at a reasonable price. I live in Beaverton but am willing to travel a little for a good market.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I know of two really good ones in the Hawthorne area in SE Portland. One is on Hawthorne on the corner of 21st, or 22nd. And the other is on the corner of 20th and Salmon (a couple streets before Hawthorne), in the parking lot of Hinson church. That one is probably my favorite. They also have fresh Salmon that is amazing.

Beaverton farmer's market is good, but it is not necessarily cheaper than a good market. Also, you cannot be certain the produce is no spray or organic, etc. You can take their work for it and most are honest, but it's not verified. So, I prefer New Seasons Market since they carry local produce and certified organic or transitional produce. Also the local u-pick farms such as West Union are great for berries and other produce (you can call to see what is available for picking or pre-picked by them). They are VERY cost effective and West Union is a no-spray facility. For some of the baby food you can buy organic frozen berries and veggies from Trader Joe's - not local, but good quality at reasonable prices.

The Beaverton Farmers market on Saturdays is a wonderful source of organic and non-pesticide fruit and veggies. They also have live music and a wonderful park right next to the Beaverton library. They are there on Wednesday nights also but no music. It is a wonderful way to get your shopping done and spend sometime with family and everyone has a good time.

I would just go to the local farmers market. I'm not sure if Beaverton has one or not. If not, then downtown Portland does a Farmers Market every weekend.

Also, reading the info on you that you have posted I just wanted to say good for you for putting your career on hold to be a stay at home mom. I wish I could do that too. I'm working on it. Let me know if you'd be interested in talking about something you could do to make some money AND stay at home with your kids!
