Im from STL. There are a lot of things here that people from out of state dont know. When Im in different states I have to catch myself from saying things people dont understand.
Anyways, we have pork steaks, toasted raviloi's, Imos pizza, we call the less classy folks "hoosiers", when you are saying your going to "The Lake" everyone knows exactly where you are going. I dont think a day goes by in the summer without someone saying "Its not the heat, its the humidity", The baby boomers put an "a" in everything, sharts (shorts), tarlet (toilet), farty (fourty), Flarida (Florida).
Anyone from STL feel free to add some.

So, what are yours?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ummmm, St. Louis.

Jo, my parents talk like that. It drives me INSANE! lol
Oh and Yes, the ol high school question! I make an effort to never ask that!

Naomi, I have never heard of "you-uns". Yes the highschool question is a little strange, I find it pretty silly to ask someone over 30 what highschool they went to. lol

Las Vegas is actually a very family-friendly town . . . for people who live here. It also has a lot of great hiking trails over in Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston for people who are not interested and gambling and boozing it up.

I live in Central Oregon, in the center of the state and it is DRY here! No rain forest here on the east side of the Cascades. It's not the heat or the humidity, it's the dry cold that gets to me. We had snow on Mother's Day.

We don't live in grass shacks. (yes some people think we do).
We don't all dance hula.
We are VERY culturally diverse here. MANY different ethnicities and many of the people are of mixed, ethnicities. Multi-Ethnic. It is common place, in Hawaii. Probably the most, of all the 50 states.
Many culturally diverse foods as well.

Some people come here, don't like it... because, the "skin color" of the folks here, is not all white. There are MANY so called "Minorities" here.

We have snow.
On top of Mauna Kea.
People ski, here.

We can talk English... as well as "Pidgin" English.

all the best,
Susan

We have a ridiculous state pledge of allegiance that we force our students to say every day. It drives me crazy, and I am a proud Texan.

Did you know that Idaho, while famous for our potatos, is actually the GEM state? Lol.

But... we DO get 2 weeks off of school for spud harvest! (at least in my hometown...) :)

Please don't judge Idaho people based on Napoleon Dynamite... we are not all that stupid... but we are pretty redneck!

When I was in Idaho, and someone asked where you were from you told them the city. Here in Tennessee, you tell them the county. Weird. lol.

I live in Minnesota and not everyone talks like they do in the movie "Fargo". :)

We get the "it's not the heat, it;s the humidity" thing too! Hahaha! And I SWEAR that half the older generation calls the chiropractor the CHOIRpractor!

The Cities is referring to the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis and it doesn't snow 12 months of the year here! Yesterday we had a high of 90 degrees!

T. O.'s response was great! The funny thing is, even though we live in the land of 10,000 lakes (though it's closer to 30,000) our cabin was in South Dakota! :)

Here in southeastern Florida (which honestly could be its own state) we have our quirks too:

1) Many ladies, including the elderly, view grocery shopping as a contact sport.

2) Nobody ever wears panty hose. Ever.

3) We also claim it's the heat and not the humidity.

4) We are so relieved when the snowbirds go home and we can eat out again. It gives new meaning to "the early bird special."

5) You will see the CRAZIEST driving you have ever seen, anywhere.

6) The Mercedes Benz is the "every man" car (not mine LOL).

7) People are extremely vain and image conscious (not me hopefully).

8) You can have a pool party for Thanksgiving (my favorite). We usually serve Thanksgiving Dinner al fresco!

9) The beaches are some of the best in the world (also a favorite) - makes all of the above worth it!

answers from Salt Lake City on

Red, did you know there is a Cleveland in Idaho? I had to check to see if that is where you reside, since my Grandparents live there.

My husband is from Preston, Idaho and all our families live there. If you have ever seen Napoleon Dynamite, that is REALLY what Preston is like. There really is a barber shop called the Cuttin Corral. It takes about 1 minute to "drag State Street".

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Some Utah fun facts:
We love "fry sauce" which is a mixture of mayo, ketchup and sometimes pickle juice or relish. A lot of Utah fast food joints carry it.
Not everyone in Utah is Mormon (Latter Day Saint) although a lot are, and nearly everyone is familiar with the religion.
(**BTW Latter Day Saints should not be confused with "Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints; Utahn's are just regular people. We do not wear bonnets or have multiple wives.)
Jello is big here. Someone always brings some sort of jello salad to family affairs. Sometimes it even has chunks of fruit or vegetables in it.
"Funeral Potatoes" also ever-popular at family affairs. So-named due to the fact that they often are served at the luncheon after a funeral, they are basically au-gratin potatoes (often served with crushed cornflakes on top).
The Great Salt Lake is NOT a great place to swim. It reeks of sulfur. It is gross.
Utah is a great place for outdoor activities. There is a lot of camping, hiking, boating, skiing nearby. It is very family friendly here, lots of parks and things for kids to do.
Families in Utah tend to be fairly large as the LDS religion focuses on family. 3 children is considered to be a smallish size. 5 children is about average.
I'll add some more as I think of them :) Fun question!

See I never got that fourty thing. No one I know speaks that way.

I have been told we have an obsession with where you went to high school. :p

I can't remember what it was that we celebrate that no one else does. Oh yeah, the Halloween joke. My daughter goes to Xavier in Cincinnati and was trying to come up with a Halloween joke. They all looked at her like she grew a second head.

StL is St Louis, MO actually STL is our airport code. :p

Molly, I explained the high school thing to Troy, believe it or not it actually makes sense. He said it is kinda crazy but it makes sense. Oh he is from Pontiac Il so he thinks this is a big city. :-/

In St Louis, The Loop, Dog Town, The Hill and the Landing. Gotta live there a while to figure all that out. Along with the North, south, west and east county thing.

I am from Springfield MO. If you ever see Springfield style Cashew Chicken, it originated from there. The is STILL huge debate whether Missouri is pronounced with an EE or AH sound at the end. I am on the EE side. If you ever want Chinese food or to go to church, that's the place to be. There's either a church or Chinese place on every corner. The piano bar downtown is AWESOME.

Now I am in Florida, the drivers are AWFUL. I would rather be back in St. Louis any day!

Here in WA I find that a lot of people say they are going to the "beach" when they really mean they are going to the lake. I am from Southern California, so when we moved here and someone said "lets go to the beach" I was thrilled, grabbed my boogie board, and stared at the lake like they were nuts. I also remember ordering a soda and no one knew what I was talking about...everyone calls it "pop" here. I hate that.
It really does seem to rain 9 months out of the year.

we have bad crime rate?? I wish I had something fun to say about Federal way...IT is not all that amazing though. We have high property taxes, making it darn near impossible to keep small businesses.

It does have a very very fun farmers market in the summer!! It is very local.

In the spring and summer in the city is alot of fun. We are a festival place...We start the summer off with folk life festival and we have a Bite of Seattle..and we round it off labor day weekend with Bumbershoot...a music and arts festival...There are many more throughout the summer. These are just the bigger ones.

I dont know if we say stuff differently...People who are not from here have said we talk funny...But I dont think that is fair, considering they talk funny too me:)

Oh and, yes it is true...there is literally a coffee shop on every corner! I am happy to report though they are not all Starbucks any more...Now we are seeing more Peets, Seattle's Best and or Tully's!! You can still get your caffeine fix...It just doesn't have to be the Bucks!!!

answers from Pittsfield on

I moved from a small town in upstate N.Y. to Western Massachusetts- only about 2 hours away- but there were some things that stuck out for me.

I moved out here when I got a job teaching high-school Spanish, and I heard "wicked good" or "wicked funny" A LOT. I heard it so much that I started saying it too-lol.

The one thing I haven't been able to get used to is the way they shorten the word hamburger to "hamburg". They do it with cheeseburger too. It's even written that way on the packages of buns in the grocery stores. My DH was born and raised here and he calls sprinkles "jimmies" or "shots" (haven't gotten used to that one either- at least not enough to start calling them that myself). Not that big a deal, but I guess I'm a creature of habit.

I'd love to hear from someone originally from Australia or England- they have some really different and interesting expressions!

Here in the Minneapolis, MN area when you say you are going "up North" it means your going to your lake cabin. Seems like everyone and their 2nd cousin has a lake cabin around here, even if you already live in a lake town. Seriously, we are the land of 10,000 lakes and there are lakes everywhere, why would you need to buy another place to live, take care of, travel to every weekend, etc. ......my husband and I don't get why????

answers from St. Louis on

I'm from Southern California but have been living in STL for about 11 years. We have a major highway here that is known as Hwy 64 but no one here calls it that - we call it Hwy 40.

People kept asking me where I was from because I would call it a freeway instead of highway and most people here say "Hwy such & such" where I usually say, "Take 270 south to 40 east to..." instead of putting the word highway in front of the numbers. Someone told me that that was a Calfornia thing.

I couldn't get over that Missourians (or St. Louisians) ask what school did you go to? And they really want to know what high school, not college. Most looked at me weird when I said Gardena High. lol!

I also noticed in Southern Missouri that some people say "you-uns". I guess it means the same as "y'all" in the south. : )
