Hello Mommas,

My husband and I are debating on weather or not to move to Lockport, Il. I basically have two questions. One, what school district do we want to look in? We have a preschooler and an almost 2 year old. So looking for a good school is very important. And two what is the town like? Thanks in advance, look forward to all your opinions.

Hi L.,

I can tell you from past and present experience that the Lockport/Homer school districts are wonderful! I grew up in Homer, but went to Dist 92 and had an excellent education! I was well prepared for high school and college. Due to my experience, we have chosen to live in the Lockport area and raise our daughter. She is now in the Dist 33C school system and I cannot be happier! She is getting a great education and the teachers are wonderful! I without reservation would recommend either school district! Lockport has come a long way since I grew up here, but all for the better. I have to agree with others that the high school will pass once the boundaries are revised. The taxes are high in some areas, but it is no different than Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Mokena, or New Lenox. Best of luck to you and your family. If you are looking for a preschool, I know Shepherd of the Hill has a wonderful program as well.

I live in Lockport and I have a special needs preschooler and a 2 1/2 year old. My oldest has been in a school in the next town over but through Lockport...it is wonderrful he has made such progress. There is also main schools in Lockport that are equally great. Saint Joe's, Saint Dennis, Taft, Milne Grove, then the jr. high that goes with Milne Grove. Lockprt itself is great it has a small town feel with modern things. The town is broken up in a few sections ...historic, homes that were built in the 60's (where I live), newer but reasonable subdivisions, and, then there is
lower income houses. A little something for everyone.

I was born and raised in Lockport, and attended Milne/Kelvin Grove school district. We had a great education. Homer schools are good too, but you will pay more in taxes. The high school is great, but overcrowded and the students go split shifts. They have tried several years to pass a school referendum, but the residents are tried of their increased tax bills.

Both school districts in Lockport are good. Though they say 33c is the premiere one. I have a special needs child that goes to 92 (we live in 33c) and a six year old that goes to 33c. We will never move out of the district because of the wonderful services this school provides to both of our kids. You will be pleased if you make a decision to move here!

As far as the town is concerned back several years ago it wasn't that good but they have come a long way with economic development. Target coming soon. WalMart here is awesome!

Be careful when you select a home we are looking to upgrade in the district and some taxes are out of hand. Be mindful of that - hopefully your realtor can direct you into the right area.

Hi L.: I live in Lockport/Homer Township. We moved here from the southside of Chicago specifically for the schools. I have 4th grade twins in the 33C district. We have been very happy with the school and teachers. They are all very attentive and willing to go the extra mile for our kids. We attended preschool through the park district program and I really couldn't say anything bad.
We move on to middle school next year, and have heard great things about that also.
I do have concerns about the overcrowding at the high school, but am hopeful we can figure something out as a community. The biggest problem was the former board announcing the boundaries east/west of the tollway. If the current board can figure out a way to make sure the boundaries are fair to all, I believe the referendum would pass. They are currently holding meetings in all districts/towns that feed into the high school, so they seem to be willing to listen to us residents.
And unfortunately, with the way Illinois funding is these days, all towns in the area are struggling with their budgets.

Good luck with your decision!

I, I have lived in Lockport District 92 for 11 years, with kids currently in high school and 4 th grade. I am very, very pleased with the quality of education they have gotten, and our district has one of the lowest costs per student, which means they are using their money wisely. Great teachers, I don't personally care for the principal at the Kindergarden/first grade building, but it's just a personality thing. The high school is very crowdedand they have been unable to pass a referendum for do long that it is near crisis. We need to find a way to better support our kids and great teachers at the high school. My daughter is a sophmore and is taking 2 ap classes, which I think is nice. She went to science fair in middle school and that was great, too. I recommend, but check it out for yourself, too.
