I did not know --and Mickey and Minnie are about my age. I'm ashamed that I was unaware :-/
Thanks for todays wonderful trivia lesson!
I have never been a fan of Disney but after my girls started watching some Mickey Mouse I began to wonder what the relationship is between Mickey and Minnie. I turned to Wikipedia to find out and found out her full name is Minerva! WTH? Now I feel like I know even less than when I set out on this quest for knowledge. So how many of you knew her full name was Minerva?

wow, sounds like a birth control pill ;-)
"My doctor recommended Minerva."
Mickey's real name is Mortimer.
Can you check out the relationship between Donald and Daisy too? I've always wondered about them.
I've also wondered why there are no moms in Disney movies -- usually. Ariel, Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Belle .... no moms. They're all dead or missing. Sleeping Beauty had parents but she was stolen from them. Nemo's mom gets eaten. Pinocchio only had Gepetto. Just wondering.....
I did not know that! Learn something new everyday, huh?
:)
Mickey's original name was Mortimer.
Mortimer & Minerva has something of a ring, doesn't it?
Yep, heard this many years ago but didn't think much of it. So I decided to look up what Minerva meant.
Minerva (Etruscan: Menrva) was the Roman goddess whom Hellenizing Romans from the 2nd century BC onwards equated with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, magic, and the inventor of music.[1] She is often depicted with her sacred creature, an owl, which symbolizes her ties to wisdom.
She's a wise "Minnie".

nope, didn't know...never researched the names or anything like that...
how funny.
i didn't know, and i've watched Mickey and Minnie since i was little. i also have bought all the mickey dvds they came out with a few years ago with all the old cartoon shorts on them for my kids. i also go to disney about 1-2x a year most years. so you are much more informed than me:)
Minerva is also Professor McGonagal's name from Hogwarts. I didn't know it was Minnie's name. Aren't they sweethearts? We have a Christmas DVD in which Mickey says he has to buy a gift for 'his girl'.
Had no clue... but I can see why they shortened it to Minnie!!
I always assumed that they were like an 'engaged' couple.
I didn't know that but hubby and I aren't fans of Disney. The kids could care less about it too. We go when we get free tickets but it's just for the rides. We like anti-Disney parks better. Busch Gardens, Universial Studios, etc.
I recently saw a documentary about Ub Iwerks who helped with the creation of the 'mouse'. After watching the show I then surfed the net and found out about her name. Interesting huh? I bet if you walked up to Minnie at the park and say 'Whats up Minerva?' The person in the costume would be confused lol.
I knew! But I have to say I was very diprived as a child. I knew nothing about any of that as a child. I was 20 years old before I knew Peter Pan's friend's name was Tinkerbell! I saw her flutter around at the beginning of ABC's Sunday Disney movies when I was a kid in the 70s. Never knew her name! Never knew anything. So when I had my first child at 21 I wanted my kids to watch and be familiar with Disney movies since I knew nothing and wanted my kids to have better. My kids are 24, 16 and 6 year old triplets and they pretty much know the basics in the Disney world, lol.
