Mamas & Papas-

The dog is getting older and having an occassional accident. There is wall to wall carpet. Spot treating is no longer doing the trick. Thinking about getting a spot cleaner/ steam cleaner/ at home wet vac/ to shampoo the carpet. Any one have a favorite out there?

Thanks much,
F. B.

I have a Hoover Carpet scrubber. I like the way it works, it doesn't leave the carpeting too wet. I use Mr. Clean with Frebrez in it and it seems to take out the urine smell.
I have the same problem, my dogs just can't hold it while I'm at work.

I also put down plastic runners in the places they 'go' the most. Then I can just clean it with a mop or bucket of water and a rag.

Keep in mind that the urine is also soaking into the carpet pad so while you may shampoo the carpet, it's still in the pad and will continue to come up and during the hotter months, it will smell.

My husband bought me both a Spot Bot and a Rug Doctor. Yes, the big one like you rent at the local Walmart. I frequently clean my carpeted areas and they come out fine. BUT you do realize that urine and feces have numerous bacteria in them right? So be sure you get a bottle cleaner for the machine that disinfects too.

I used the bottles of cleaner I buy alongside the machines in the housewares area. They're right under $20 per bottle. No rinsing required. I've used many things and these just do not leave a residue.

Also, use the hottest water you can. It makes a huge difference in the ease of it coming up.

All a wet vac does is vacuum up fluid, it does not work well for cleaning.

Here's my opinion on the lower cost carpet shampooers.

The brushes/bristles are the only thing that matters. Period. They all suck up fluid. The bristles that go round in circles side by side, they leave a fine matted up mess on carpet after it's been cleaned. It mattes it up. It has brushes sided by side going opposite ways and that is just too hard on some carpets.

The Rug Doctor has one long paper towel roll shape and it spins around like a roll of toilet paper does. One long bristle/brush going one direction. It doesn't leave the carpet matted up.

I just borrowed a neighbor's Bissell spot rug shampooer for something that spilled. It was helpful in the moment but I found it a pain to use. It has 2 circular brushes on the bottom and a hose with a small nozzle/suction thing. It's not a floor model - it's more like a canister type. So you have to work on your knees. But it's probably cheaper and good for an occasional spot.

Does the dog pee in the same spot all the time? The puppy pee pads work pretty well, especially if you tape 2 of them together to cover a bigger spot. That might work at night or near the door if the dog goes there but can't hold it. But that's not practical if the dog is erratic and losing control pretty much anywhere.

We had a Bissel Pro Heat that worked very well for us. It is time consuming though and you have to make sure to not use too much soap, rinse a lot and keep running it to suck up as much of the water as possible.

Our machine lasted about 8 years! I have since not replaced it and I call the pros in about once every 3 months. We paid less than $300 for the machine and used the Hoover pet shampoo from Home Depot.
