Well, That Can't Be Comfortable!

So my teething almost 10 month old has been waking up alot the last week or so (he had previously slept through the night consistently for a long time). Last night he woke up about 1am, and was just making noise (not crying, just babbling and hollering). We have a video monitor, so I checked on him (he was just sitting there) and decided to let him hang out for a bit and see if he would go back to sleep. After a while with no noises I checked again and he had fallen back asleep, but apparently had fallen asleep while still sitting up. He was slumped forward, with his head between his knees! It looked horribly uncomfortable and my first instinct was to go and straighten him out, but my need for sleep told me that he would move if he was uncomfortable and to go move him would result in him waking up and wanting to play. He woke up again about 3 and did the exact same thing. When I got up and checked on him at 7 he was still slumped forward with his legs sticking out in front of him (literally he was sitting up and just leaned his head and torso forward until he was laying between his legs). He woke up about an hour later happy and normal as can be. Anyone else's baby sleep in an unorthodox position? I was worried he would be sore laying like that all night, but he doesn't seem to be at all.

What can I do next?

Wow, poor guy must have been sleepy! My son's never done anything like that, but did find him one of the first nights in his big boy bed with head on the floor on a pillow and his body still up in the bed (feet in the air!)

If he's in an uncomfortable position then he'll move. I can't begin to count how many times I moved a child in an uncomfortable position only to have him/her wake up. Children are extremely flexible so they can sleep in positions that would be terrible for we adults.

My son would occasionally sleep on his stomach with his knees bent & his butt straight up in the air. He did this once in a while from baby-dom up until just maybe a year or so ago (he's 12, lol!). If he's waking up happy, I wouldn't worry about it, though I understand feeling like you need/should move him to a "better" sleeping position.

My daughter used to fall asleep like that all the time - folded over in half. We figured it was better to let her be than potentially wake her up trying to "reposition" her. Babies are amazingly flexible and it doesn't seem to bother them at bit. She also did a lot of the laying-on-stomach-with-knees-bent-and-butt-in-the-air - which is actually "Child's Pose" in yoga. No worries!

ETA: We took at lot of pictures! :)

My son slept like a starfish (from day 1)

I was an octopus (constantly moving, and never in the same position every time my parents checked on me. I have some really fun photo-series of me sleeping).

One of my sisters NEVER made it to bed early enough!!! It was always about 30 seconds too late! She was constantly falling asleep with her feet on the ground, legs locked straight, and torso laying on the bed (an L shape)

One of my brothers preferred to sleep like your son (he now flies internationally once a week or more often, and sleeps GREAT on the plane in coach... he sticks the extra couple grand he's allotted for business class and their fold flat "beds" into savings).

I definitely agree with you!!! When my son was 4 he fell asleep in a box that he liked to sit in... haha all these nice toys and he wanted that darn box. I thought eh... I'll leave him there for a bit. I think it's adorable when they crash in odd places!

I have pictures of my son doing the exact same thing!! My niece sleeps in the weirdest, most uncomfortable looking ways and never has problems when she wakes.

My daughter did exactly what your son did. I took a picture and sent it to everyone LOL. Like others have said if it's uncomfortable he'll move.

Kids are so flexible...those strange, contortionist-like positions don't bother them at all. If that's the position he's fallen askeep in, he's clearly comfy! Don't worry....just let him sleep.

LOL!! Kids fall asleep in the strangest positions, but they're really bendy and don't have the types of problems we do ;) That is just adorable!

Most common: kids slumping in the car, asleep. My husband always flips, I leave them alone!!

My oldest daughter, when she was about 9 months to a year old, used to always climb into her toy box and fall asleep. It wasn't like it was full of stuffed animals, there were some hard, uncomfortable toys in there! WHATEVER!

My middle child, another daughter, used to fall asleep on the floor under the coffee table. She'd 'hide' under there to avoid being put to bed for nap time, then fall asleep. I'd leave her there too! Whatever works!

My son is a butt head when it comes to naps, and if he's uncomfortable, there's no way that kid is falling asleep! If your little one was really, really uncomfortable, he'd let you know it ;)
