Weird Textured Bm's

This has just happened lately, but my son has suddenly started having really weird textured bowel movements. They are light brown in color, but they have this black sandy substance in them that is completely difficult to wipe off. He is 14 months, and recently started the Next Step formula. Could that have something to do with it? He has also been eating a LOT of bananas lately.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I haven't seen any of the black specks for a few days, so I assume that it all worked itself out. I'm sure it was either the bananas or the new formula. I had a question about him still being on formula. The thing is, he is on Next Step formula, which is for 9 - 24 months. He is lactose intolerant, and drinks soy milk also, but the soy milk alone isn't enough for him according to the nutrician, so he needs the Next Step, only about 20 ounces or so a day. He is also drinking a LOT of water! I never really worried about it too much though because it never seemed to bother HIM, it was just really too gross for me to deal with! Thanks for all the advice.

Why are you using formula at this point? Did the doc say you needed to? You can put kids on cow/soy/goat milk at their first birthday (saving you TONS of money over continuing to buy formula) and you won't have formula poo any more. You mentioned the bananas which can be allergenic - more so as they ripen up. As long as he isn't constipated or having hard poos, don't worry too much.
Good Luck!

I always say when in doubt check it out. It could be anything from to much iron to a change in formula. Don't worry until the doctor says you have a reason to worry. Bowls do funny things sometimes.

I agree with the other moms. It is probably his diet. One day my son had a bright turqouis colored bm and I freaked out. Turned out my mom had given him some St. Patrick Day cookies, and it was just the food coloring. The Dr told me that since they are still young, their systems cannot digest everything properly.

J.,

First, bananas are naturally very high in iron... which has a tendency to cause irregularities in bowels. Also, a change in formula could also be the culprit. Check the formula to be sure that it isn't already high in iron, and watch his banana intake. Above all, if it doesn't clear up soon, consult your son's pediatrician.

Bananas have little black seeds in them--when my daughter eats bananas she always has gross black specks in her diaper! Could it just be that? Since he's eating a lot of them you're probably seeing a lot of seeds...
