Weird Question About Fish Preparation...

I recently had a terrible dining experience at Epcot's Coral Reef Restaurant and without going into too many details I have a question for you moms. Don't laugh, I seriously just don't know the answer. Here it goes:

When you order fish from a restaurant, do you usually have to ask it to be cooked well done? And if you order Mahi Mahi, is this a fish that normally has a little blood and dark pink juice in the middle, or is this not cooked well enough? My husband ordered his Mahi Mahi dish and it was lukewarm, not exactly really cold in the middle when he took a bite... BUT apart from tasting horrible and stealing his appetite, it had dark red juice in the middle and a little blood tinge. He turned it over and then gave it back to the kitchen. The waitress just told us the cook said that is the way it is made, medium and you have to ask for your fish to be cooked well done. Now I know a beef steak cooked medium has pink in the middle, but do you normally have to ask for your fish to be cooked well done in Florida? I've never had to do that before and we're from TX originally. Now we like sushi, but we need to be expecting it LOL!

Any thoughts, comments, or enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

For the record, my catfish wasn't all that great and they charged us for a lemonade we didn't even drink and sent back because it tasted weird, we're not going back, ever.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your tips or information. We were never told before hand it would b cooked medium. We left the restaurant and by the time we looked at our receipt we were on the other side of the park. I called the disney dine line and they said to go back to the restaurant or to guest relations. I had just started indigestion, which is rare, because I only remember having it once in my life back in May of the year 2000, I mean literally I never get it EVER, just that one time and I thought I was having a heart attack, because I didn't know what indigestion or heartburn was! My husband knew it and told me though.

My point I guess is that it was too much of an inconvenience to go back or to guest relations, so we just left for home.It just seemed so complicated to me to try and let them know what happened. If my husband had felt better or me we would have complained to the manager on site, but we just wanted to get out of there, then after we left I felt sick so I didn't want to wait in a line at guest relations or go to the restaurant on the other side to complain, plus they were busy.

Thanks for the tips on fish preparation, I'll be sure to remember to ask that it is well done or medium well, no pink I guess.

I like eating at Norway, China, Mexico, and Moracco or in the Land in Epcot, I think I'll stick to these from now on.
I like Trails End at Fort Wilderness Campground, Crystal Palace, Liberty Tree Tavern, Cinderellas Table was OK, Fort Wilderness Lodge BBQ place was OK. Those are my suggestions.
I've never tried eating at France, Canada or Italy yet, has anyone else? Or the California Grille at Contemporary resort

Many fish are better cooked rare or medium. Mahi mahi is not one that I have heard of as a medium fish though. Salmon, tuna and a few others are preferable when undercooked. I wish you had spoken to the manager. I have attended culinary school, love fish and have eaten it all over the world and happen to be a server at Disney and I have never had mahi cooked to any particular temp - it was just cooked through. I am going to guess it was an inept cook/server who should have offered (and followed through) on cooking your fish further. Who cares how they think it should be if you won't eat it? :) Go ahead and order fish without fear! Well, be prepared with the tuna and salmon - if they are cooked past medium they are considered overcooked.

Hi Angie,

I don't think you should have to ask for fish to be cooked well done. I had the same problem with some chicken and they told me the same thing. I asked the same question- I didn't know I had to ask for chicken to be cooked well. The chicken was still pink in the middle and slimy. Yuk! By the way I do need a prayer request.. I am planning on opening a daycare soon... Please pray for me???

I'm no expert, but I've never had to tell a place how to cook my fish. I haven't heard of such a thing. But for me, if I saw pink or red juice coming from my fish, I would not eat it. To me it's like chicken or pork. Must be done through and through. Steak is a different situation. I like mine medium.

I know there are some types of fish that are prepared this way, but whenever I've ordered one, the server always said something. Regardless, they definitely should have brought your husband a new, fully cooked piece of fish if that is what he wanted. How disappointing! I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. FYI, don't bother eating at the Concourse Steakhouse (in the Contemporary Resort), either. The staff was snooty; they didn't seat us until 25 minutes AFTER our reservation time (and we have a 2-year-old) despite the restaurant being empty; the food was just average but prices were not.

I would contact Disney's guest relations immediately! There's a two-fold purpose for that... Fish does not need to be specified "well-done" when you order it! Never have I ever had to do that at any restaurant. The guest relations people need to know so that they can investigate the kitchen. Secondly, you may end up with free tickets!

I would call and talk to the manager. If you have your receipt still it will likely have the servers name on it. I would explain what happened and how it was handled. He/she may or may not do anything about it, but if you say nothing to them the poor service will continue.
Your Mahi Mahi is usually cooked to a medium. The server should tell you this to leave you the opportunity to accept that or ask for more done product. Your fish should not however be cool in the center and bloody.
I would call the manager and if they give you a good response, I would give the restaurant a second chance. Could've been an off day.
