Weight Watchers! They have a program for breastfeeding moms. You can do it online only (which I did after baby #1) or go to meetings (which I'm doing after baby #2). Go to their website. It is awesome!
Wanting to know is there is a safe weight loss program to follow such as NutriSystem or Medifast while breastfeeding?

Hi Leslie,
I would strongly recommend that you avoid any program that involves calorie reduction. Not only is that bad for breastfeeding, you will lose muscle and be doing the diet yo-yo, just gaining it back later. Another caution is that many products have hidden laxatives.
The Cinch inch loss program is safe and you loose only fat and no muscle. Check it out at http://www.cinchplan.com/healthforlife
Good luck to you!

You should hold off any diets until you finish breastfeeding. But things that will help you include good hydration, lots of fruits and veggies, and a good exercise program. I nursed for 15 months but started a bootcamp program at about 4 months postpartum and I got off all the baby weight by 9 months post partum without dieting. It was slow but steady weightloss and I built up some great core strength and muscles. Find something you love to do and work it into your schedule. It will be worth it. You will feel better and your baby will benefit from your new found energy. Good luck!

Weight Watchers has a section for breastfeeding mothers, they add more calories. It works.
Going on a diet while breastfeeding could decrease your milk supply. I would suggest just eating lean meats, fruits, veggies and carbs like brown or wild rice. Stay away from all the sweets (easier now since the holidays are over) and be sure to look at labels when purchasing processed foods. Make sure none contain partially hydrogenated oils (must look at ingredient list for this!), and high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup ingredients. Corn syrup actually disrupts the hormone leptin in the brain that tells you when you are full. So, you seem more and more hungry when you eat these products. Stay away from sodas and such as they contain so much of the stuff that you are liable to eat your entire refrigerator!
stick with Weight Watchers. Solid principles with nothing you "can't" eat. I did it after both kids and lost all my weight in about 6 months.
It works best when you have a partner and the logical choice is husband, even if he doesn't have weight to lose, it still helps when everyone is eating the same things.
Good luck!

Weight Watchers has a program specifically for nursing moms
L.,
I wouldn't diet while nursing because that sweet baby girl needs those calories. But working out would certainly help. I know it's next to impossible to get out of the house, but there are lots of exercise DVD or VHS tapes that you could do while the little ones nap. On warmer days you could put them in the stroller and go walk, and some malls even have stroller exercise classes that would help in the winter.
And, no offense to the herbalife mom, but just because it's natural doesn't mean it's safe. Ask your doctor about any kind of supplement you might consider if you're nursing.
L., when I wanted to lose weight after I had my first daughter, I started weight watchers. I started the program and incorporated walking for the first 4 months and then added in running ( I now run ALL the time!). I loved it! I started at 170 in September and by January I was at 140. I was careful to continue to eat well so that I could continue to nurse. It worked VERY well for me. I did not buy their food, but I did do lots of research so that I could vary my diet enough that I did not get bored.
good luck!
T.
PS.. I nursed my litle girl for an entire year with no problems at all while following weight watchers! Just made sure I maintained my levels of hydration and ate healthy!!

Depending on how long you want to breadfeed, I would wait to implement a weight loss program right now. I would wait until you are finished breastfeeding prior to worrying about the weight loss, because it could affect the amount of milk you can produce. I would eat healthy and watch your calorie intake, if you want to reduce your weight. I've read that when breastfeeding you should allow an extra 600 calories for your diet. You should maintain a diet of @ 2000 calories while breastfeeding and then you can reduce down to 1500 calories when you are finished breastfeeding. You should see a weight loss naturally from breastfeeding, especially once you finish. Just my opinion, but I would definitely breastfeed as long as you can and not try to "diet" at this point. Increase your vegetable intake and mother nature should take care of the rest:-)
