I actually started working out about a year ago. I lost about 110 lbs for far. It just seems like those last 40-50 lbs are the hardest. I was walking and now I just started running. So maybe that might help. I gained alot with my pregnancy. I had toxima and I was really over weight. If someone has any ideas out there that could help me lose the rest of this weight please help!

What can I do next?

Lots of cardo, instead of just running, maybe try something like swimming, soccer, dancing (fast), biking or rollerblading (fast). It keeps it interesting and these are not thing if taken seriously you can slack off of. Team sports I mean. The YMCA should have a woman's soccer team, swimming pool and aerobics. Seriously girl, I used to play soccer and go dancing three times a week before I got married and now...well on baby number two and am seriously regretting the laziness. I hate running, but if I am running with a ball I love it. Good luck, oh and this is coming from my Pop (he's a cardiologist) who constantly rides me about my weight. Good luck! Jen

Maybe at this point you want to fine tune your diet. Some of the things I recommend people do are:

1. Drink more water- at least half your weight in ounces daily
2. Eliminate refined sugars/processed foods from your diet, eat more whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, millet, polenta, oats, amaranth, etc. Try sprouted wheat breads instead of whole wheat (health food store).
3. Increase your fiber mostly with vegetables. Don't eat more than two servings of fruit a day if you are still trying to lose weight. Eat as wide of a variety as possible. If you need something to help you get more nutrition from fruits and vegetables, try adding a whole food concentrate. Go to my website below for more info.
4. Lower your fat intake to under 20 grams a day.
5. Eliminate dairy from your diet, it is not a "health food" it is meant to grow a calf from 90 pounds at birth to over 200 pounds in it's first year of life. It is also not the best source of calcium. The best sources are plant based- bok choy, turnip greens, watercress, mustard greens, collard greens, kale chickory greens, dandelion, escarole, dark lettuces, fennel, carob, oranges, tangerines, papayas, currants and figs.
6. Keep a food journal! There is a good one on Amazon called "Diet Minder".
7. Read a great book on *science based* nutrition, NOT a fad diet book. I recommend Dr. Joel Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" and "Disease Proof Your Child". "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell is also a great read and is a text that Furhman refers to.

Hope that helps :)

First of all, WAY TO GO on your weightloss so far! That is so great, and you should be very proud. Keep it up!

I think the exercise is great. Running: great! You might try cross training (elliptical, small weights, maybe yoga) to give your body something to "confuse" it so it burns more calories.

The other half of the equation is, as you may know, nutrition. (Notice I didn't say "diet".) Eating healthy, portion-controlled meals will help so much, especially when you combine it with exercise. This is the hardest part, however, becuase it requires much discipline. But if you look at it as a family lifestyle change, and make your whole family's meals healthier, you won't feel like you're depriving yourself so much. It's simple if you keep it simple: grilled lean meat (fish, shrimp, scallops, chicken, sirloin steak, pork tenderloin...grilled without marinades, sauces, etc. Try dry rubs and seasonings instead) combined with a steamed veggie (again, without butter etc) or salad with light dressing makes a delicious dinner! Skip the bread, rice, or potatoes. Instead, try brown rice or sweet potatoes (they are very sweet plain).

curves is a good resource for weight management. If you don't want to join one, check Ebay for the Curves Member Guide, which will give you 6 weeks of nutrition and which will teach you how to manage your weight and increase your metabolism so you don't have to diet. It's great!

Two other things often overlooked: sleep and water. You need to get a decent amount of sleep to get the most out of your workouts and lose weight. Also you need a ton of water (half your body weight in ounces...so if you weigh 120, you need 60 ounces of water every day.)

Good luck!
H.

Great job losing so much weight already!
One thing I wanted to tell you is that cardio workouts shouldn't be all of what you're doing. You need some strength training to get those last pounds.
Muscle burns fat long after you have stopped working out. Build that muscle. It sounds weird at first because you think... I'm not trying to bulk up my frame, I'm just trying to lose some weight. But resistance and strength training tones your muscles and you will lose weight.
Some free weights, resistance bands should be all you need. You can do simple things in your own home. Lunges, push-ups, etc. The easiest way to get fast and best results is to do each move slowly. And hold your position for as long as you can. You will only need to do that about 20 minutes at a time 3-5 days a week. I'm sure your Marine husband can give you some simple floor exercises that he learned in boot camp. You've got a great resource right under your own roof.
Congrats again and good luck with the rest!

S. ~ Congratulations!!!

My recommendation is to change up your routine and to time yourself on the ones you have been doing. After you do the same exercises your body becomes used to it and you no longer see results...

With your running - time yourself and then set a goal to improve your time. This also helps you burn more calories in a smaller amount of time. You can also carry weights with you ~ Remember the higher your weight the more calories you burn when you exercise so add some weights on to your normal activities.

Change up your exercise plan. As I said before your body becomes used to the exercises ~ Don't give them up because they are keeping your weight down but add in some other exercises such as aerobics, a spin class, karate, whatever interest you.

Make sure that your watching your calorie intake ~ Change up your diet again and go one step healthier...I heard adding 1 Vegetarian Night to your meal plan can do wonders and my husband and I plan to try it this week.

God Bless!

I am a dietitian so I would look at your diet. If you are not getting enought calories your body will act as a scavenger eventually and hoard what you eat. So make sure you are getting enought fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains, and meat. Also, if you are not getting enough sleep it can stop you from losing weight. Hopefully this helps!

Wow-congrats on all that weight you have lost already!!! OMG that is amazing! You must be so proud! You've lost a small person there and deserve a standing ovation for that!
It sounds like you have hit a plateau though, so I would say it's time to bump everything up to the next level. You have started to with your cardio exercise, but also start working on two other things: Muscle training and diet tweaking.
First add weight/resistance training into your exercise routine. The more muscle mass you have, the mores calories you burn when you are sedentary. So yes, you literally burn more calories while you sleep with more muscle.
Join the Y, or another gym (I love, love, love the Y for so many reasons--including their awesome child care).
You have other options too, there are many resistance exercises you can do at home without a gym or with a small amount of hand weights. Look for beginner books or DVDS on resistance training. I really like Yoga. For strength training look for ones that either say that or "power" yoga--but again start at the beginning and work your way up.
(Another benefit to joining a gym is all the classes they have to keep you interested, like yoga and weight training)
Also look at your diet, the less you weigh, the less calories you need--so you may need to make some tweaks there to get past that last hump. Weight Watchers is a great tracking program that teaches you to eat healthy and helps you track your daily food in take. You can either just do their online program which has great, great tools and resources, and/or you can go to meetings which are good if you need that extra incentive. I had to start going to meetings to get that final 15 off and I was amazed at how the accountability really helped me. But honestly the online tools alone that help you track all your food intake are really awesome. The best thing about weight watchers is that it's about training yourself how to eat healthier and not some fad diet plan or supplement --it does take some work and commitment though.
Good luck and just keep at it, as you know the journey doesn't happen overnight but if you keep chugging you'll get to where you want to be!

Hi S.,

Congratulations on a wonderful accomplishment! My husband also lost 110 pounds. It was the summer of 2005 and has kept it off and feels great.

After his first 60 pounds which fell off easy with improved nutrition utilizing an absorbable multivitamin and mineral complex, he started running. He ran track in college and really missed it. He had carried so much weight he was not able to put that kind of stress on his knees and ankles but after losing 60 pounds took the chance. The first day he ran (3 miles!), he ate a fat-burning bar called Access. This is a patented fat-burning bar that also sustains energy through a workout. It also inhibits adenosine that causes lactic acid to build during a workout. Without lactic acid building, there was NO soreness in his muscles so he was able to run again the next day a little farther. He lost an additional 50 pounds after that point.

I also know ladies with Fibromyalgia that eat these bars to prevent the lactic acid from building up. One of the worst things a person with Fibromyalgia goes through is the muscular discomfort.

If you're interested in details, let me know. I'd love to help!

Regards,

M.

First of all, congratulations! That is a lot of weight to lose and you are doing great so far. Running will probably not do anything better than walking as long as when you are walking you are walking fast (not at a comfortable pace). One good way to burn more calories is to do an interval workout where you run for a little while and then walk for a little while. You could maybe run for two or three minutes and then walk for one. This is a good way to burn more calories. Other than that, you may want to switch up your routine. Do different things like biking one day, running another, walking another, rollerblading and ellipticals are other could calorie burners. Sound like you're doing great so far. Keep up the good work.

I am a stay at home mom, I have a 3 yr old daughter and a 1 yr old son. I was a personal trainer for 16 years and I just wanted to congrats on the success of losing 110lbs! Yes the running should help you lose the rest of it. I would suggest interval running in the beginning. Walk for 5 minutes (warm up) run for 1 minute, walk for 1 minute, run for 1 minute. Repeat intervals for at least 30-45 minutes. This is an excellent fat burning workout and will also raise your metabolism. Be sure and stretch when you are finished. Do this workout at least 5-7 days per week and you will have more great success! Goodluck!

I had issues with losing weight from 2 pg's at the same time, just because I had them close together. I'm not a 'gym' kind of person. Plus, I had no way to get there. I found the Windsor Pilates on sale at Target and absolutely LOVE it. I ended up being the fittest and skinniest I have ever been in my life after about a year of doing the 20 minute video, then worked up to the hour video. It's tough! But it reshaped some muscles I didn't know I had and slimmed down others. Another thing I alternated that with was Denise Austin's daily workouts that come on TV in the morning. She would do interval training (aerobics and weight resistance at the same time) plus some light stretching or yoga. They were short, so I could do them while my 2 toddlers ate breakfast and were occupied. Hope you find something that works for you! And the best advice I ever got, Look at the inches you loose, not the weight so much toward the last little bit. Muscle weighs more. :o)
