My daughter is trying to ween her daughter from nursing now and she is trying to dry up on her own without the pill. Any advice or methods that will help my daughter so that its not so painful or hard on her breast.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your support and advice on helping my daughter ween her daughter from Breastfeeding. They are both doing well and it only took 2 weeks to completely ween my grand daughter. She is happy, playful, friendly and drinks from a regular cup or sippy cup. My daughter said it was easy for her as well and will get a check up from her regular doctor once she gets back home which is in SA.
Thanks to all, Happy Grandma and Mom

You daughter can ween her daughter by cutting back on the feedings, replacing nursing with a formula bottle with a water bottle between each formula bottle. This will help her to dry up naturally as her daughter uses the bottle more than nursing. I hope this helps.

When I weaned my son from breast feeding I dropped 1 feed per week and just replaced it with a bottle. When I started I was nursing 4 times/day, so it took me a month to completely stop nursing, but I had no problems, pain... and neither did my son - it went very smoothly. Good luck to your daughter.

As long as she weens gradually, it won't be painful. Tell her to give up one nursing session at a time until she is down to none. If she tries to do it "cold turkey" she will get engorged, plus it's not good for the baby either. From what I've heard the pill doesn't work very well at drying up milk anyway.

A friend of mine took cold meds with antihistimine so it dried her up within a couple of days...no pain. But, she weaned cold turkey. I'm actually starting to wean my 12-mo old, but doing it gradually with one feeding at a time eliminated.

keep a tight sport bra on at all times (even at night) and ice them ALL the time. Make sure she does not stimulate them at all. No warm water on them when she showers. This should help and she should dry up with in a week. Good luck

I don't know what age the child is, but in time the food demand increases and the milk becomes more and more thin. I "weened" both of my children at 13months by skipping a breastfeeding and replacing my milk with a sippy cup. Over time I did this more and more and within a week both children were sip cup able and my milk dried up. I wish I would have nursed longer. But, anywho, It was fast.

I havent' read the other posts so I'm not sure if you already got this response and by the way I'm not an expert. However, what worked well for me was gradually stepping down the number of feedings until you are doing just one or two a day. This will obviously reduce the milk supply so she is making less. Then when she is ready to stop altogether what I found helpful was to manually squeeze a small amount of milk out on my own when the pressure built up. This seemed to relief the pressure I was feeling, but because it was only a small amount of milk I wasn't telling my body to keep producing large amounts. It took several days and honestly for weeks I could squeeze a bit of milk out which was weird, but it wasn't painful and eventually I dried up completely. I hope this helps your daughter!

Hi my name is C..And my mom helped me through my pregnacys also.Well this may sound weird. But if you take two cabbage peelings and put on each breast. That will surely dry it up.And it is not painful at all.And it really works.I pray everything turns out well.

I agree with the people who recommended cabbage. I know it sounds a bit odd, but it works great. Just make sure you slightly damage the leaves first. I just used a rolling pin or a cup and rolled over the leaves, to allow a bit of the juice to seep out. Then place them in your bra and change when they dry out. It relieves the pain, swelling and helps you dry out naturally. If you sleep with it in your bra, which I highly recommend, the cabbage will be a bit difficult to peel off in the morning, but taking it off in the shower, is a very easy fix.

Good luck.

I did the cabbage trick and it really works! I just peeled off big pieces of cold cabbage and covered my entire breast except for the nipple. I did this inside of a soft nursing bra. Then I would sleep like that and it gave me relief from pain very quickly. By morning the cabbage is kind of warm and wilted but it's worth it!

We weaned slowly. I took about 2 months to wean my daughter just before she turned two. I'm trying to get pregnant so my doctor suggested I wean. I started counting on each side 60 seconds. Went down by 10's about every 10 days until we were at 10 seconds on each side. The last day, we finished before nap time and when she woke up, she got a special prize of paints and brushes to paint outside. It was tough emotionally for us both but there was not one bit of physical pain.

I think it helped her counting as well. She now counts randomly up to 60.

Good luck to her :-)

Slowly but surely! Don't drop more than one feeding in a week and stretch it out even longer if possible!

slowly. but you can ease pain and discomfort by freezing cabbage leaves and tucking them in the bra

Drying up on your own is the only way now. They don't use the pill anymore to dry up the breasts
