I have a wedding comming up in my family, and if I were to indulge in a cocktail or 2, how long would I have to "pump and dump" for, for the toxins to be flushed out of my system?

You don't have to pump and dump. Kellymom.com has more to say about it...

I had this happen just a weekend ago. I only pump about every 6-8 hours now that my son is 8 months old. I dumped the batch I pumped when I woke up in the morning. I've heard that anything you eat or drink shows up in your milk about 8 hours later, so that's what I follow.

I was told that for every drink you have, wait two hours to nurse again. I also found this website http://www.milkscreen.com/ and though I've never tried it, it sounds pretty helpful. I'd say just pump some extra before the wedding and go have a good time. :)

Hi! It can be hard to know what is ok sometimes..but this is what I was told. I talked to a nurse and the breast-feeding person when I left the hospital about that and they told me that you don't need to pump and flush unless you are going out to get plastered. The rule is for evey drink or shot...you wait two hours after and it is out of you milk supply by then....So if you have two drinks you wait four hours for it to get out of you milk and so on. So for three drinks you might want a back up way of feeding (if baby can't go that long without feeding) and then pump and flush because it'd probly start getting uncomfortable at this time if you don't get rid of the milk. Otherwize call your hospital to talk with your person to see what thay say. Hope this helps!

You don't have to pump and dump. You just have to wait till the alcohol motabolizes in you and then it is no longer in your milk.

Completly agree. Other research I've done supports Kellymom website claims. I drink a beer or two or sometimes a little more a few nights a week and still nurse my babe. Lots of time I'll wait until she's in bed for the night, then drink, by the time she eats again in the early morning, I'm fine to breastfeed, and then I don't have to pump. Only pump if you are going to miss a feeding during the time you are drinking, and then dump that milk. Plus, I think hard alchohol takes longer to get out of your blood, so I've heard beer and wine metabolize faster.....

Hello S.,
You can't pump away the alcohol in your milk, if you are drinking alcohol it will be in your milk as in your blood, once the alcohol is metabolized and removed from your blood, then it is no longer in your milk. So, you need to wait long enough before breastfeeding again. The alcohol is metabolized in breastmilk as it is in the rest of your body, so in time the alcohol will be removed. I have read that alcohol peaks in the milk 30-60 minutes after drinking on empty stomach and 60- 90 minutes when taken with food. Know that that same amount of alcohol that is in your blood is in your milk. (some people think only a fraction of the alcohol is present in the milk, not true. For safety sake I would not breastfeed for 2 hours after drinking a couple drinks and longer with the more you drink, which means to pump before you go to the wedding and feed that to baby. Hope this helps and have fun!

My lactaction specialist told me that if I wasn't intoxicated there was no need to "pump and dump" that a couple drinks were okay. She did say if you do get intoxicated, you would need to dump that milk...unless by the time you are ready to feed the baby you are sober again...then your milk would be fine too. She said you should gage it by how you feel. HTH.

I wouldn't worry about dumping. If you are only going to have a couple of drinks, you should be fine. I personally feel that when a person decides to get drunk, then they should not nurse when they are in that condition. You should go with whatever you feel comfortable with.Good luck and enjoy the wedding!

Depending on how many cocktails you have. Your body can metabolize one drink an hour. So you probably would want to "pump and Dump" after you finish drinking and then once again after that(3-4 hours after that). Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water to help your body flush everything out. No one really knows how much alcohol goes into your breastmilk, but I don't believe it is that much. If your only having 1 cocktail I don't really think it is that necessary to pump and dump. Use your own judgement!!

I was told that the milk you have in your breasts when you get home is ok to feed baby but then you should pump and dump both breasts twice before feeding again.

That would depend on how much you drink. The more you drink, the longer it will take your body to metabolize the alcohol. I also go by the earlier posts. I drink and nurse based on how I feel, if I drank too much"oops" I will pump, but usually I just limit it to 1-2 glasses of wine over an entire evening and then I feel fine about nursing. Have a great time!

with m,y first child i thought i had to do so....but now i know better....they're all right.. no need to pump in dump....only pump to keep your supply up...and obviously dump it then. but the it doesn't get trapped in your milk. only the amount that is in your blood stream is in your milk. have a great time!

I always heard that I should plan on one feeding being dumped for each cocktail, but I'd say it depends upon how much you drink, how much time between drinks lapses, and how often you are nursing.

If you can pump ahead and store up, I'd plan on several feedings from the stored supply... better safe than sorry! ;o)

Have fun at the wedding!

Personally, I wouldn't pump-n'-dump unless I was totally drunk, and I think I would based on the Peace Of Mind I would have. The fact that my boobs were making liquid gold always stopped me from getting too carried away. I think you can rest easy knowing your baby won't be affected much,...if at all. They say a drink or 2 can cause your baby to be sleepy, which might be nice given that you might be a little slow the next day if you're out too late, etc.
