When my almost 7 year old was a baby, I used the Platex bottles with a sippy cup top. They had a rubber disc in them that helped regulate the amount of liquid that came through so the child could get used to it.

Hi Moms,
I am trying to wean my 11-month old baby from having breast milk to using a sippy cup. I want to avoid to go from breast milk to bottle to sippycup. Hopefully she can be weaned to a sippy cup by her first birthday, which is a month away.
Any helpful advice on how to do this? Has anyone tried this? tried this successfully?
Thanks in advance.

I did this successfully with my oldest 2 kids (the youngest is just 5 months so we aren't there yet). I used the old fashioned, tupperware cups to start with, the ones that are plastic cups and you can put the lid on that has the spout...they aren't spill proof, but that's what I started with when they were at the table eating so they could get used to the idea of a cup. Since it's not spill proof, the liquid comes out when they tilt the cup upward and they start to figure out how to get it. They still need to suck a bit to get more, but at least it will drip into their mouths so they know what they are supposed to be doing. Once they got the hang of that, I used regular sippy cups with no problems. They never used bottles except to suppliment feedings and it was such an easy transition from breast to sippy cup! Good Luck!
K.:i guess i could just call you.
try using a straw cup it will be easier and then you will not have to transition from sippy to straw .
BF babies can take realy easy to straws...it may take a few days but they will get it.Call me if you need more specific details

Hi K.:
I have never tried it that way, but, when switching your child to a sippy cup I suggest the very soft and very flexible "spout". They aren't spill proof, but it's soft like a bottle nipple and easier to figure out for baby than if you went with the hard spout.
Good luck!
Just start introducing a sippy cup as soon as possible with water in it so she can learn how to drink from a sippy cup. Take the valve out of the cup, and let her try to drink water from it. Be patient because we started introducing the cup to our baby at about 7 mths old, and he didn't really catch on until 10-11 mths old. It took a lot longer than we expected;
I weaned him completely by 14 mths from nursing from me (just a week ago), and he's drinking more milk now from the cup than he ever did while I was still nursing. Our baby adjusted himself and gradually drank more from the cup as he got less from me.
When weaning baby from nursing, drop 1 feeding every 3-4 days, then after 4th day, drop another feeding. This gives baby time to adjust as well as your body. We dropped the late afternoon feeding first, then the lunch feeding, then morning feeding; the last feeding time to go was the one right before bed. For us, it took about 1 & 1/2 months to wean, and this part wasn't as difficult as I expected. I hope this helps you out!
I weaned my kids from BF to sippy cups by using the Nuby cups. They are so much more like BF than the traditional sippy cups, that I think it really helps. We also started using them a couple of months ahead of time with water so that the transition to milk was no problem. And we also adjusted our bedtime routine with a sippy cup of milk while reading a book before bedtime. None of my kids liked drinking cow's milk at first, and it took two to four weeks for them to really get used to it, but I just continued to serve only milk with meals and at bedtime until they got used to it. They are all great milk drinkers, they just needed some time to adjust to the cold, thick cow's milk versus the warm, thin breast milk. Hope all goes well!!
what other solids and fluids are you giving you baby? you could start by giving you breast milk in spoon or using a straw is normally the more contoll teaching even before sippy cup.ja
I did that with my son who is now 2. It was a very easy transition although I was so apprehensive about it! Our bedtime routine had to change b/c I used to nurse him to sleep, so we started drinking milk on the couch (through a nuby straw sippy cup) and reading a book. He loved the new routine and we never looked back! Good luck!
