Weaning from Bottle - McKinney, TX

Hello! My daughter is almost 10 months old and at our last appointment, our pediatrician said we can start weaning from the bottle to a cup. How did you do this? I've already started giving water and occasionally juice in a take and toss cup or sippy cup, but I don't know how she would take her formula in a cup. She won't hold her own bottle, so I am not sure how a cup would work. Any helpful advice/suggestions? I would appreciate any!! Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

I started by giving juice and water in the sippy. Neither of mine were interested in the sippy cup until 11 months old. Once they got the hang of the cup I gradually replaced bottles with cups one at a time. I started with the mid-day bottles. I think the morning bottle was the last to go. I waited 3 or 4 days after dropping the first bottle before I dropped the second. After that, the last 2 were easy.

my ped. always advised me to start giving small amounts of milk in a cup before taking away the bottle & it also lets their body adjust to regular milk before switching them completely, this worked great for me!

I wouldn't worry about trying to give her formula in a sippy cup. Just continue to give her everything else in one. At one year, if she's just down to one bottle of formula a day... then she'll be doing really well with a sippy cup.

When my son did well with cow's milk.. I just gradually started giving him more of that each week... until at one year he was drinking more cow's milk than he was nursing (I breastfed). But either way, at one year... you take away the formula and the bottle goes with it. If she drinks milk okay out of a sippy cup, then you're fine. It'll take her a little while to get the hang of it, but she'll be fine!

I started doing the same thing at 10 months. I begain replacing one bottle with a cup. She still s not a big fan of it but she will use it. In a couple of weeks, I am going to replace another bottle with a sippy cup. Mine is not a huge fan of the bottle so it has not been too difficult.

I'm working on weaning mine too, but she just bites it to get the milk out. I want to know when she will get the hang of it. She is 9 months old and just now holds her own bottle!

Yes I tried it but neither my son now age 3 or my daughter now age 2. I had to wait till they were over 1 year before I had any luck. They wouldn't drink formula out of it. I had much better luck when they went to regular milk.

When they went to the sippy cup it was fine at nap time but bedtime we had to still use a bottle for awhile or she scream and we could never get her to bed.

They don't sip it for long time, they both drink there milk all at once. Both have been to dentist and no cavities.
The Dentist said if they slowly drink juice or milk its the sugar that sits on there teeth. So we must of done things right.

My son is 7 1/2 months old and loves the Nuby brand sippy's, you can find them at Wal-Mart for $1.76 each. The spout is soft like a regular nipple, we tried the harder kind and he didn't really know what to do with them b/c they were hard.

I would try switching out one bottle for a sippy a day for a week or so and then add as you feel she can tolerate. Your dr. is just giving you a "Normal" (if there is such a thing) timeline as to when things need to be done, but you do what feels right for you and your daughter.

Good Luck,
J.

I never put formula in the kids sippy cups, I like the idea that formula is for the bottle, milk for a sippy cup, so I too just gave them milk in a sippy cup at around 10 months. I am actually going through the same process with my 10 month old boy, who also has no desire to hold his bottle! But I have found a NUBY brand sippy cup that has handles and a straw, as he has not figured out how to tip back sippy cups to keep getting a drink. If she does not drink through a straw yet, try using a regular one and dropping alittle in her mouth at a time so she figures out what it is for. It may take practice, but it works soo much better for us. And, anywhere we go he can drink out of a cup or juice box. Best of luck, this is a fun time in their lives ~A.~

My daughter does not hold her own bottle, but she will drink out of a cup! I did not push the cup, I started by putting just water in it and putting it on her tray. For awhile she would just play with it, but now she will drink out of it. I still have to help her some and tip it up, but for the most part she will drink out it. She does not drink a lot yet, but I think it is more practice for now. I do not plan to give her whole milk until age one, my daught is prone to allergies, so I feel no need to rush it.
Dont worry, she will get the hang of it, just give her time and dont push it.
