Weaning... and Some Other Questions...

Hi moms! I'm hoping you all can give me some advice. I weaned my 1 year old son a week ago and it went surprisingly well. I just cut down feedings a lot and last week got pretty engorged so I nursed him again and I haven't had to nurse him since. I never got full again. Now it's a week later, though, and my breasts are sore, mainly in the nipple area. They aren't full, but they are sore like when you get full. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if it's normal. Another question... I haven't had a period yet even though I haven't been nursing. I have an IUD, though (Mirena). Any experience with this? Should it have come by now? I'm just worried I might get pregnant and not know it, even with the IUD. I've heard it happening to people! Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

On the Mirena question. I have had the IUD for over a year and havent had a period in a year. My doctor told me its very common not to have one and I am loving it! As far as getting pregnant I can see why you would be worried I know I was but the protection is better than the pill so I would just give your doctor a call and see what he/she says about it.

Hi- I think i would take a test, to be safe. My milk took over 7 months to dry up, with some nipple soreness when I first weaned. I believe Mirena does have so low level hormones that it releases, so the soreness could be from that too. best of luck to you.

Can't help with the breast pain, but I am nursing my fourth child (10 months) and I never got a period until I was more than done nursing. I nursed the first three for a year each and usually about a month after weaning it came. Don't get too worried, everyone is different. I've only had six periods in the last seven years, so my advice is ENJOY!

I had the week lapse before being engorged and sore for about 2 weeks. It did go away. I think I got my first period about 3.5 weeks after weaning. I didn't have an IUD in, and did get pregnant :). If you are worried about pregnancy, take a test, but with the IUD, that is its whole purpose, so chances are unlikely.

First and foremost, you need to take a pregnancy test now. Be sure to rule out that option. You need to get the IUD out if you are.

I have experienced everything you have mentioned and then some. It is normal to have your nipples feel like that off and on for a couple of months. I even had little drips of milk after 6 months, it was crazy. You were nursing for a year, it takes a while for your body to adjust.

As far as the period thing. That is just an unfair freak of nature. After my first son, I didn't get a period for 1 year after I stopped nursing, it was great. My second son, I got it within a month or two after I quit nursing. Then here's the kicker - with my daughter, I started my period when she was 6 months, I STILL NURSED HER FOR 6 MORE MONTHS. Totally unfair! In short, it is all normal maybe just not typical.

Good luck and no worries!
