We Need In-house "Field Trips" - Ideas? Websites?

Due to rising gas prices, our principal said it will cost our school quadruple the amount to bus our kids on field trips this year. YIKES! We still want to give the kids this "extra" learning opportunity, so we're looking for people to come to us - presentations in the school. If you have any suggestions on groups who do this we would appreciate it... everything from performing arts to science.
We're a K-5 elementary in NW San Antonio. Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for the great ideas! We do have Magik Theatre coming for a holiday program and a few others in the works for the spring. The McNay Art Museum provides free trips for the students, so many of our classes are going there.
I've given a list to our principal & teachers and they are very thankful. Keep posting if you have other ideas... we're always looking for something new and educational.

Hi L., I run a children's party business and one of my specialties is in house field trips!!

I host build-your-own stuffed animal parties. Much like Build A Bear but I bring everything to you. The kids actually get to stuff their animal by hand during a character building stuffing session - no sewing involved. Then they get to make a wish on a rainbow star, fill out a birth certificate (depending on age and time, sometimes we send these home) and dress it (if you choose outfits).

They get coloring sheets and stickers in their special take home bags.

This is a great hands on activity as we combine character building with F-U-N! Kids feel like they have actually helped to make their own animal, instead of watching a machine do it.

Large groups of 25 or more start at just $10 each!! We have seasonal animals such as Spook the Kitty and Boo the Ghost for Halloween and Ralphael Raindeer and Ginger for Christmas, these are all just $10 each for groups of 25 or more and only $13 each for small groups.

Or feel free to call me directly at ###-###-####

Good luck! I hope to hear from you soon.

Morning L.;

There is a couple Albert and Pam Ramirez that trained and
toured with Ringling Bros Clown College and then toured with
the Red unit of the circus for several years. They live
here in SA and do special things for children shows.
They also know quite a few other entertainers, maybe if
you call them they can give you their price and even
give you other names to call.

Since they also have two small children most of the time
their recorder takes a message.
Just tell them B. C referred you to them!
Have Fun

Hi L.,

My 5yo goes to a private pre-school and they bring in all the field trips for the pre-school. We usually see the Firetruck, Base City Space Program, Institute of Texan Cultures, and the Majestic Theatre usually comes a couple of times. The kids usually love this. You could also check with some of the colleges for performing arts programs. We also have the education bus for Via public transportation. They really had a good time with that one too. I'm sure there is more, but that is all I can think of right now. If you need more information on any of these feel free to contact me.

Have you spoken with the high schools? When I was in high school, I had to do a senior project. I put together a traveling science show and presented it to all of the local elementary schools. I had to write grants to raise funds for it so the whole thing was totally free to the school system. Maybe someone in the area is doing the same thing, or maybe you could plant the idea for a student struggling to find a project.
Also, high school drama classes and music ensembles could come and perform for them.
There is a lot of talent in our local high schools and colleges too. You could help them meet their requirements too.

http://www.si.edu/ (Natural History Museum) - then the kids could put on a slide show of sorts to give a "tour" of the museum. Put a letter out to parents and ask if anyone is in any unique occupation, clubs, etc. At the school we went to last year we had the "Bread Lady" come out and make homemade bread with the kids. They brought home the dough and we had to cook it. It taught science (yeast), math (measurement), reading (recipie) and was really fun! We also had someone come from that knew about prairie life and she made corn husk dolls with the kids. There is a restaraunt called "Cowcatchers" on Bulverde road and they have a woman who makes homemade bisquits out of a chuckwagon. She is fabulous with the kids. I hope this helps. We are new to the area so I can't really give you any specific names.

My Sil found some people who come to birthday parties and do science experiments. She found them on craigslist. The kids really liked it. What about seeing members of the ballet company will do something, and seeing if the Children's Museum, or the Witte have any ideas or people?

HI L., I'm sorry I'm so slow responding to your request. You might consider contacting the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet. They have occasionally performed at schools. The dancers are young (usually ages 12 - late teens), but are very talented. Their phone number is ###-###-####. You might consider waiting until after Nov. 23 before calling. They are gearing up for their Cinderella performances that weekend. Good luck.

My husband is an Occupational Therapist with Edgewood ISD. He is also a drummer by choice. He has started to do drum circles with adults as well as students, specifically Special Ed. students. He could give a hands-on presentation with some cultural history behind each of the drums (and percussion instruments) he has. I don't know if this is something you would be interested in. But he agreed to talk with you with more details if you are. You can call him on his cell at ###-###-####.

My son went to St. Thomas Espicopal last year and he was in preschool. For that age group the school did in house field trips as well. Majik Theater came a few times. The Via public bus came and gave the kids a tour of the bus and a ride in the parking lot. I know there was more but I can't remember. I think if you would call the school would share there resources with your school.
