Ways to Keep Kids Healthy

My son is two years old and my youngest daughter is now 9 weeks old. I was previously staying home with my children up until last week. I have now put them into the day care that I am working at. My son has never been in day care before, and the first week that he was there he has croup. I am giving my kids vitamins every day, making sure to clean every thing thoroghly, and making sure that they get plenty of sleep. I need some ideas on ways to keep my kids from coming down with every little sickness since they've not been in day care before.

What can I do next?

My kids were also put in day care for the first time when my son was 2 1/2 and daughter like 14mos I believe. Now at first it was just 1-2 days a week and I was concerned about them getting sick myself. My son was sick twics with minor stuff and my daughter never got sick. Now they are FT so I be sure they are in bed earlier enough to get enough rest. They have been FT for 1mos and no sickness yet. Now I breastfed them both which does build their immune system. I give my son vitamins but not my daughter yet I will start her also though.
Also we bought a air purifier for their room to help.
Good Luck

I read or heard somewhere that using a humidifier helps. I keep humidifiers in both kids' rooms.

What I read/heard was that using the humidifier keeps the mucous membrane moist so it won't crack and let those little germmies in.

You might want to think about trying that. Otherwise, it sounds like you've got it covered.

First of all, if you keep your house completely germ free, they will come down with everything! Their immune system needs to be built up a little! So many parents these days are worried about their children getting sick, so the colorox everything, every time it's touched! Now, you should wipe down your house after they have been sick and about once every week or two, but everyday doesn't let them know what germs are and they won't have an immune system to fight off little colds and things!

Good luck,
C.

If you find a way to keep your kids healthy around other children then you should write a book. It would be a best seller and you could retire from the profits :)
Seriously, it seems that the first two years your child is around other children (daycare, preschool or school) they catch what ever comes along. So, thay can get sick now or if you keep them home, they will get sick later. Be aware that you might start getting everything that comes along as well.
The best things you can do are what you are already doing. Try not to overdue it with the anti-bacterial stuff, they are finding that it is actaully weakening our immune systems.
Hang in there, it will get better.

You're doing everything I can think of that would keep your kids healthy. Give them 3 months. They'll probably be sick quite a bit for those 3 months while their little immune systems build up a resistance, but that's what's needed for them. It's very typical for kids that are first entering daycare to be sick a lot for a couple of months. My DD has been in daycare off and on since she was 6 months old. She just recently started up again and hasn't gotten sick. We're not doing anything different than you, it's that she's now used to the environment and has an immunity to the area. Just be patient, Momma, I know it's frustrating. But after about 3 months they should be adapted and fine :)

I feel your frustrations. My son's grandma watches him, but with his other 3 cousins and anytime they get sick, he does too. I know it is a clean environment, but the germs just go around regardless. My poor little guy has had so many ear infections and has an appt. this Fri. with EAR NOSE & Throat for possible tubes. Uuugh. Good luck.

I tried everything I could think of with my little one and it seemed like she got sick every 2-3 weeks. She is now 13 months and has been in daycare since 4 months. For the past 2 months she did not get sick and I think she just finally has some immunity built up. Just know that it won't last forever!
