My son is 11 months old, weighs 25 pounds eating foods from the table, and he is very healthy. Two weeks ago I took him off his formula and tried whole milk, but he did not like the taste, so we tried soy milk vanilla and he loves it so we have stuck with that, but since we have started he has about 2 poopy diapers a day and they are always watery! Has anyone else had this problem w/ the soy milk? will it get better? He acts fine still and he goes for his 12 month checkup in 2 1/2 weeks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I took my son to the doctor and she said to stop with the apple juice first and then see what his bowl movements are like, in two day I could tell a difference. As far as the soy milk goes she said that, that kind of milk is fine since he eats food like he is suppose to but to try him on half soy and half whole milk so we did that and so far he is getting use to it. As far as the poops go they are alot better, so I guess it was maybe the juice which he was drinking which was apple and white grape.

It could be that her body doesn't like soy milk. I can eat tofu and edamame with no problems, but soy milk gives me diarrhea and gas that we could sell to the Pentagon as a chemical weapon if we could find a way to bottle it. Try her on goat's milk. It has smaller fat particles than cow's milk, and many people who can't drink cow's milk have no problem with goat's milk.

My son had to have soy formula before he drank milk and then I mixed half Next Step soy formula and half whole milk. I don't know why your son's poop would be watery from soy milk. He may have a problem digesting the soy or something. I did give my boy soy milk when he was having a problem with water booboos, but it helped. It sounds to me like you should ask your doc about it. Of course, my son always has runny poo when he drinks a lot of juice too.

My son went from breastmilk to whole milk at that same age. He had watery poops for about 3 weeks--my ped. said it was just his body adjusting to the different milk. He went back to normal after a full month of being on milk. I know it might not be the same since your baby is on soy milk but maybe he just needs that adjustment time?

Been there! My second child was put on the soy milk once he was off formula because lactose intolerance runs in the family. He, just like yours, had runny/diarrhea diapers. A friend, who's son is the same age, changed a diaper and I saw solid poop and told her, "Caleb's never looks like that". She suggested I see the doc who sent us to an allergist. A scratch test was done on his back showing an allergy to apples and a blood test reveiled an allergy to cherries, but when the allergist found out the kid was drinking the soy milk he almost burst out laughing! He said that soy milk will give you runny diapers for sure! It was really hard switching to whole milk after the vanilla soy tasted so good, so I still (at 6 yrs) have to put Nestle quick chocolate powder in his milk or otherwise he doesn't like it. As long as we stay away from soy, cherries, or apples (even juices w/ apple in it) he has solid poop. Yeah! His younger brother hasn't had the allergy testing done, but we treat him the same way~ it's just easier. Good luck and get away from the yummy soy vanilla!!

I dont think soy milk has the same nutrients as in cows milk. I know you said your son didnt like the taste but I would try 2 % ,etc. He probably likes the soy milk because it is sweet. Or try to mix 3/4 whole milk and 1/4 soy and at least he will be getting more nutrients that way.

When we took my oldest daughter off formula, she didn't like the whole milk either and we gave her vanilla soy milk. She had the watery poop just like you explained. I talked to her pediatrician and he told me it was because her body needed the milk fat from whole milk. He said the formula has the right amount of fat in it and the whole milk does, but the soy milk was not giving her the fat that she needed. He suggested that we put flavoring in her milk to get her to drink it. We tried chocolate and strawberry (the lower sugar nesquik) and she started drinking it with no problems. Hope this helps and good luck!

Mine is on soy milk and she does great! The human body rejects cow's milk because our bodies aren't designed to digest it which is why so many people have problems digesting it. I wouldn't think it's the soy milk causing watery poop, in fact I've always heard the oppostie - at least regarding FORMULA, I assume it's the same with milk - that the soy version may cause constipation or harder poop in some people. Some people have digestive and bowel problems with both cow's milk AND soy milk, but nobody NEEDS either kind of milk. My doc said substituting the two eight-oz cups of milk per day with calcium and vitamin-D fortified orange juice is just fine (and of course give them less than 14 oz if they also eat stuff like cheese or yogurt). Yes they need fat but they can get fat from peanut butter, avocado, eggs, meat, etc.

My girls wouldn't drink milk either at that age. So I just added some Nesquik, like another Mom, to their milk and they loved it. One loved the chocolate and the other preferred the strawberry. Not to alarm you, but a vegan friend of mine is restricting soy consumption based on some new studies that have been coming out. She has done a lot of research and this is one site she recommended http://www.wholesoystory.com/ and http://www.hiddensoy.com/
There is an article she read and summarized it :

Some points of interest:

**Soy contains goitrogens, which damage the thyroid

**Soy contains lectins, which cause red blood cells to lump together and may trigger abnormal immunity responses

**Soy contains oligosaccarides, sugars that cause bloating and gas

**Soy contains oxalates, which prevent calcium absorption, cause painful kidney stones and vulvodynia, a vaginal disorder

**Isoflavones, lauded as natural estrogens, are serious endocrine disruptors, lowering testosterone, causing mentrual disorders, and cancer cell proliferation

**Soy milk is far from a natural food: it is filled with rancid fats and high in sugar

**Soy cheeses are largely made with hydrogenated oils (safety level of hydrogenated products? ZERO)

I still like soy milk but will definitely drink less of it. Not to scare you but just to give you some information. She said that almond milk or rice milk is a good alternative if you are choosing to purposely avoid cows milk.

It may very well be the sugar content in the soy milk. If you are willing to try other things I would like to recommend goat milk. My brother loves it (he is 4 and cows milk makes his poo watery). I think someone else recommended rice or almond milk..I would just watch out for added sugar on the ingredient list.
Good luck!!

I have no personal experience with soy formula and runny diapers (though my infant is breastfed and has the most awful diapers you ever saw....). But my mom tells me I was lactose intolerant as an infant and had to use soy formula, and that's when she switched to disposable diapers. But I'm perfectly healthy now and absolutely love cow's milk. If you're concerned about a health problem, check with your doctor, but the diapers may just be because it's a different food and so it digests differently. (Just like poops are different if you feed corn, or oatmeal, or prunes.) :)
