Waterfront Vacation Within 3 Hrs of Chicago

My hubby is EXTREMELY stressed and is in desperate need of some R&R (as am I). We are looking for some place to take a short vacation that would give us a chance to relax, as a family. We have a 4 yr old, 2 yr old, and 4 month old, and want there to be a lake to swim in. We can't do camping, because we don't have the gear for the whole family, so it would need to be like a resort or really nice cabin area. We'd also like the possibility of renting a boat (though my hubby has never used one, and I haven't piloted one since I was a kid).

Any thoughts? Any idea how much we should budget for it? It will probably just be a Fri-Mon vacation.

What can I do next?

There is a wonderful resort area in Utica, IL...near Starved Rock...It has the word "Bear" in it but my son and family enjoyed it very much. It's about 2 hours from here in the western suburbs. Water park and stuff.

Grand Haven, MI is great, right on the lake and very family friendly. You can find some nice rentals (condos and houses) and usually at this point in the summer they lower their rates. They have hotels there too! We went there last summer and had a blast!

You might want to look into Wisconsin Dells. Wilderness Territory has condos that you can rent and there are all kinds of activities at the resort and in the general area. We are going in late August and renting a 2 bedroom condo for Fri-Mon and it's costing about $800. We liked the condo idea because we can take some food stuff with us and with the two bedrooms, it will be easier for nap time/bed time with little kids.
