Water in Belly??

I have a healthy, happy 3 year old daughter. Today when she was running I thought I heard water in her tummy. I heard it again later and told her to jump up and down. It sounded as if she had a gallon of water in her body. She used the potty and it still sounded that way. I have never heard of such a thing. Is this normal???

What can I do next?

That has been the norm for all of my kids. I usually hear them swish when they run shortly after having a cup of water or juice. If they drink more than they eat, you will get that sound when they run. I've never thought anything about it. Just found it funny. If you think it could be a problem, it doesn't hurt to ask your doctor.
I chalk it up to being a funny kid thing.

We I was a kid we used to think this was hysterical. We would all drink a bunch of water and then jump around and try to hear it slosh in our stomachs! I think somewhere in my box of memories I have a pic of us all sitting at a picnic table chugging water! Now that I am a parent I think of how good it was because we were always getting our daily water allowance!! Anyway, I do not know all the reasons for it, but I have never worried. My son does it all the time, and we still laugh hysterically! :)

Hi M.,

I experienced it as a child and I've heard it before and usually there is a nutritional issue as she may be retaining water or there is gas. Her digestion is just not quite right. Is she constipated regularly or is there a tendency to diarrhea? I had a long term digestive illness. The doctors diagnosed me correctly but treated me incorrectly and caused years of problems.

Healthy is a relative term these days. I would need to know a little more about her eating habits and her environment. It's nothing that should scare you though you should pay enough attention to it to fix it.

If you want to give me more information I'll try to help or you could go to a local health food store or a naturalist to diagnose. Most doctors would say nothing about it.

Regards,

M.

I haven't noticed this with my son now, but when he was around 1 I would hear this as I rocked him to sleep after he had his sippy cup of water. I don't think it is anything either.

Oh that's funny! It brings back memories. I used to play softball as a kid. I started getting dizzy on a hot summer day, and my step mom told me I was dehydrated. I drank out of the water fountain for 20 minutes straight and had a bottle of water immediately afterward. I ran around the softabll field and heard it sloshing around. It reminded me of Templeton the rat from Charlotte's Web. I continued drinking water (large amounts) It was a distraction for me. Once i got into the car and we started travelling I threw up. So I would just watch how much and how quickly she drinks her water. But it was an uncommonly large amount of water I had drinken.

I have a 22 month old son and his tummy does the same thing. I asked the pediatrician about it and she said it was perfectly normal. It doesn't seem to bother him, so I am hoping as he gets older it stops. The dr. assured me it would!! I hope this helps!
