Water Breaking? - Grove City,OH

Ok. So I'm due on April 29 with my 3rd. My first 2 both came 3 weeks early. So, I'm expecting this one anytime. Last night I got up to go to the bathroom and when I got back to the bed my water broke-or so I thought. It wasn't a gush or anything but it did run down both legs (sorry if that's gross). I did not have any contractions, but with my first the exact same thing happened. I was sitting in the hospital for 22 hours before I started feeling any contractions. So, I got to the hospital and the little strip they use that is saposed to turn bright blue for amniotic fluid turned green-twice. They tried to even move the baby a little to try to get more fluid out, but they could get anymore to come out. Then they did the FERN test and it came back negative, so they sent me home. I want to know has this happened to anyone else? I'm a little worried because I know that if your water breaks and you don't go into labor w/in 24 hours, there is a risk for infection. I did have an appointment for an ultrasound scheduled for this morning and when I went, she measured the amniotic fluid and she said it was fine. She didn't do a FERN test or anything, she just said that since I wasn't having and contractions yet and wasn't leaking anymore, just to wait it out. I feel pretty stupid needless to say because this is my 3rd. I KNOW that it was not me loosing control of my bladder. I had just went to the bathroom and even so, with all of my pregnancies I NEVER lost control of my bladder at all even when coughing or sneezing. Like I said, I feel kinda stupid, but even more so I'm worried that if for some reason it was my water breaking, I don't want to wind up with an infection because nobody believed me. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Congrats on your almost-newborn! :)
First, you could have a high leak--any leak can 'heal itself' and reseal. And like a previous poster, your amniotic fluid replenishes itself so don't worry about your levels being low. As for infection--the easiest place to get infection is in the hospital. Stay home as long as possible (24hr rule doesn't apply as long as you are at home--I've known of women who have gone a week after their water has broken...again, it replenishes...just rest and drink lots of water)...and ONLY go in to the Hospital once a good contrax pattern has been established.
My friend was gushing fluid (high leak), but water hadn't REALLY broken...no contrax in a pattern...went in to the hosp. anyways...after hours of no contrax, they had to start PIT, epi, etc...eventually a vaccuum extraction...big tear, 45 min to stitch, didn't get to hold baby or nurse, baby had low blood sugar, fed a formula bottle, got nursing all screwed up, etc...ALL BECAUSE she didn't wait until contrax really got started.
ALL WOMEN deserve a wonderful birth. I believe it is our birthrite. Follow your instincts, listen to your body and your baby, and stay away from the cascade of intervention. I wish you an empowering and wonderful birth!

I had the exact same thing with my 3rd and I was a week and a half "late" so I was anxious for it to be real, but sure enough I was leaking from my bladder, and yes I would leak even after I just went potty, and I had never leaked urine before in any of my pregnancies either. The baby had just dropped really low and put a LOT of pressure on my bladder and even after you potty there is still urine present that the baby can push out with a strong kick. Pantyliners are your friend, and I know it seems gross. Your body will tell your baby to come out (or is it the baby tells your body?) either way it'll be time when it is time. The baby can't stay in forever! Labors that progress naturally are easier on mommy and baby. I would stay home, take it easy, drink water, walk a lot when you are not resting, and it'll be time before you know it. By the way I also had the ph strip test that turned green, protein or sugar (I can't remember which) in the urine can do that. The Fern test is much more accurate if it came back negative you most likely did not break your water. Good Luck and happy birthing!!!!!!

I had this happen with my son...but i was having contractions too. Nothing regular, but they were there. My labors are fast so doc had me go in and they checked and nothing said my water had broke..actually they went in and broke it for me to spead up the contractions. I know the feeling. My son was my third and it amazed me how what felt like the norm with my first was actually very different. They said there are times when you have a little fluid gush when you lose your plug. Hope this helps and Good luck.

I have to agree, it sounds more like your mucus plug. I experienced water breaking last April, and if they suspsect, in the LEAST, that that's what it is, they do not let you leave the hospital. They put you on IV antibiotics immediately, and you remain there until you deliver. But remember, just because you may have lost your plug, it doesn't mean you'll have the baby immediately. And you can experience losing the plug more than once, because it actually grows back! Interesting fact, there. Sounds like you're fine! Don't worry!

I had the exact problem with my 4th!!! I was convinced my water broke, but they told me that i must have lost control of my bladder and didnt know it. But it is possible for your water to leak some and then close back up, or for the baby to hit your bladder and you not realize it. I would just watch for signs of labor, do your kick counts, and if you have any worries at all then call your doctor right away. They are there for you, and they have to listen to you, dont let them fool you, if you truly feel something is wrong follow your instinct you know your body better then they do! Just watch for signs of infection and anything unusual, and if your water did break, and isnt leaking now there shouldnt be any worry about infection.

I've had 4 kids but only on my last did my water break. If it is amniotic fluid, the flow of fluid will not stop because even after your water breaks, the fluid is still produced to a certain point. I think many many people think their water breaks but they get so much pressure in their periareas that they just don't feel the sense of urinating coming anymore. If it's your water, your contractions will most likely come in time. My water broke with my fourth and I still didn't have any contractions though they made me rush right in to the hospital since it was my fourth. Laid there for hours and finally in the pm, they helped me along and he was delivered that night at almost 6:30 pm and my water had broken at 5:30 am that day. Guess everyone is different and every baby is different. Hang in there. Doesn't sound like you have much longer to go anyway. Good luck

Agreeing with what others have already written, that it's likely mucous plug starting to come out. Also, if you're worried about infection - if your water breaks spontaneously, the chance of infection is quite low AS LONG AS you don't insert anything into the vagina (no sex, no fingers, no vaginal exams, no tampons, etc.), and this is actually true for 24-72 hours. Studies that compare expectant management (waiting and watching) for 72 hours versus induction/augmentation at 24 hours show that the risk for infection does not change again, as long as nothing is inserted into the vagina. And for those women in the study who waited for 72 hours after their waters broke, 95% of them went into labor on their own. :)

Best of luck to you - hope you have a wonderful, gentle, empowered birth for you and your sweet new baby!

With your amniotic fluid level being normal, FERN test and paper both being negitive, the chances of it being your water is EXTEREMELY Minimual. Don't feel embarressed at all. It happens all the time, even to people on later pregnancies. I'm not sure if it was urine or what it was that came out but it was not amniotic fluid. They can measure the amount by ultrasound and if about the same amount was in there both times then you didn't loose any. I don't want to undermine your motherly instinct, but the chances are just low. The doctors have tested it every way possible and you are fine. That you can relaxe.
