I just bought a new house and have well water. If you have well water what do you use to keep your whites white?? I don't have water softner. The water is not horrible no marks in toilets just making whites dingy. Not bad enough to turn our hair red or anything.g. I grew up with well water but didn't dinge clothes. Please help!!!

What can I do next?

Do you have a water softener and rust removing tank? If so, these things will help. I would NOT use chlorine bleach because it'll actually absorb the iron and discolor the whites even more. I worked in quality control for a uniform company and this is the first thing we learned. I use a few shakes of baking soda and/or white distilled vinegar (I put it in the bleach dispenser) and I don't have any problems with the well water discoloring things.

there is a product called iron out that can be used for laundry to cleaning your toilets. get a water softner and rust removing tank or you will have more than just your whites to be dealing with. your hair will also love you for it. my MIL has to use some type of stripping shampoo 2x a month or her hair will start to turn a orange color from her water.

Add some baking soda to the wash and some white vinegar to the rince. Some wells bring up more mineral deposits then others.

God Bless you....I had well water growing up and it was AWFUL. We just could not have white clothes at all because of all of the iron in the water. EVERYTHING got stained with iron. In fact, my hair DID turn red because of it. I was in junior high and folks would contstantly ask me if I dyed my hair. At that age, how in the world do you explain that your hair looks like it does because your parents were too poor to do anything about the well water? Short of installing expensive treatment systems, I don't know of anything that works.

You might try adding baking soda to your white loads. Dreft for baby laundry works well too.

I have well water and have not had any trouble with rust but our water is hard so there is lots of deposits. I use Borax in my wash and also use white vinegar in my washer. The Borax is a great laundry booster and things come out real nice.

We do have a water softener but I also use Borax as an extra water softener in the laundry. My cousin always wonders how I keep my whites so white.
