Washing New Baby Clothes

Hi,

Just wondering if it is necessary to wash my daughters brand new clothes before I put them on her? I know you are supposed to wash everything when they are newborn, in perfume free detergent, which I always did, but now she is almost 1 year old, so do you think I still think it is necessary? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I have always washed new clothes. I guess it is something I got from my mom. However, I recently read something that makes me SO glad I do it: apparently, all new clothes are treated with various chemicals, such as fungicides, before shipping. This is to keep them from getting musty, etc. when they're on the shelves. (This may not be true of organic clothing, I'm not really sure...might be worth looking into if organic clothing is something you can afford -- I can't.) My MIL had been giving me a hard time about washing all the new clothes, but after I read this, I felt so vindicated. And I still wash everything except socks. :)

I always wash new clothes. You just never know who has touched the clothes and if they washed their hands prior to touching them. I only used Dreft for the first few months then I switched to Tide. I've never had any problems, but my kids don't suffer from any allergies. If you are still worried you could add an extra rinse cycle to completely get rid of any residue.

Hi Jennifer, I always wash new clothing. I totally agree with the lady that wrote to you and said you never know who has touched it or where it's been. I would say you can try and wash her clothes using the same soap that you use and if she breaks out then I would continue to use a perfume free detergent. I hope this helps! God Bless you and your family!

Usually I do wash things however sometimes I get soemthing and want my son to wear it right away. it has never hurt him. It is a personal preference. Do whatever you think is best.

It's probably better, but I wouldn't worry about it if you don't. I'd say treat her brand new clothes like you do your own.

a quick rinse with some fabric softner would be a good suggestion because most fabrics are originally treated with harsh chemicals (you can feel it and smell them)
I would rinse them until they are 5 yrs or 6
if you dont feel or smell it then put it in the dry for a few seconds and see if the smell appears if not you probly wont need to rinse or wash them
