My husband has been trying for another child and back in august i took a home pregnancy test(clear blue easy digital) and it said i was pregnant and i made a appointment with my dr and when i took the dr office pregnancy test it said negative so they did blood work and said i wasnt pregnant. Well we waited a few months to try again and i was late on the period this past month i was suppose to start around the jan 25th and i never did well i waited til feb. 3 to take the at home pregnacy test( clear blue easy digital) and it said pregnant so i took another one to be sure( answer home pregancy test) it also said pregnant so i made the appointment then the next day i woke up bleeding and the dr sent me in for more blood work. it the blood work came back that i was not pregnant. So i went to the dr yesterday to talk about it and i was really confused. He kinda gave me the impression that i was making it all up and said if it was anything it was a chemical pregnancy. i asked what could be causing the false postives and he said he doesnt know. But i was wondering was i ever pregnant or was it just i bad test?

What can I do next?

You definitely need a second opinion. You want someone that is going to understand you. Did you have problems with the first pregnancy? I had some bleeding in my first pregnancy and then was having problems with getting pregnant again. Luckily I have a very understanding doctor and he helped me through a process of getting pregnant. We found out that low progesterone was a problem. We did ovulation testing and then 6 days after sexual contact I had blood work to confirm. I was put on progesterone immediately and will be delivering soon. If you want to get pregnant and are having problems you need a doctor that will work with you and help you with the process. Someone understanding.

First, find a new doctor. If he can't be sympathetic, he's not right for the job. Personally, I don't go to a mechanic who can't drive and I don't go to an OB who doesn't have the ability to have children. There's just no way you got THREE false positives, so yes, it was a chemical pregnancy. It happens a lot and for many women the second baby can be harder to conceive. Second, I'd think about a midwife instead, they are FAR more helpful with natural ways to track fertility and do things to maintain an early pregnancy. Third, stop wasting money on CBE digitals. They are no more accurate and if you're having trouble conceiving a viable pregnancy, you'll spend a lot of money testing each month.
Good Luck! :)

I'm not sure about what is going on with your body, but here's my two cents...take it or leave it ;)

If your doctor, the person who is supposed to be there to help you figure out what is happening with your body, is making you feel like he doesn't believe that you're telling the truth, its time for a new doctor. Plain and simple. I know it is quite common for people to experience pseudo pregnancies, but I don't know why or how it happens. There is obviously something going on with your body and you need a doctor that you can trust will help you figure it all out.

I had a somewhat similar situation. I had the Mirena in and got pregnant. When I took a test and it was positive, I went to the doctor. The urine test there said no, I was not pregnant. But, they sent me for bloodwork anyway to be sure. I had hcg levels of 25, which would indicate a pregnancy, but they never doubled/tripled like they were supposed to. Obviously, I had other issues in that I had an IUD in, but the doctor explained that the home pregnancy tests have gotten so advanced, that they are often times MORE sensitive than the tests the dr. offices use. The tests used by doctors will pick up hcg levels starting at a certain number, but the HPT will pick up hcg levels lower than that. I am no expert, but it sounds like maybe you are getting pregnant, are able to know about it sooner with the advanced HPT, but for some reason, your body is not sustaining the pregnancy? I have friends that have gone on Clomid for that reason and had perfectly healthy babies. I would agree that you deserve a doctor that will talk to you about this and find a solution. Good luck!

Nikki,
It sounds like you might have been pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are very accurate as long as you wait long enough and carefully follow the directions. As late as your period was, and considering that two tests were positive, you likely were pregnant and had a miscarriage. I would go to an OB/GYN and have a pap test and get a thorough check up to make sure there is nothing that needs medical attention. Good luck with becoming pregnant!

How old is your doctor? I'd definitely find a new one too. I've had two miscarriages. With this last one I was nine weeks along before the pregnancy ceased so the first two blood tests came back positive.

With the first, though, I had taken two home pregnancy tests and they both came back positive. A day or two later I started heavier than normal bleeding and went to the doctor's office. That bloodtest came back as negative on the pregnancy.

Most women don't know they were pregnant before they have an early miscarriage. Was your "period" a little heavier than normal? I'm guessing that is what happened.

But I would definitely recommend a fresh doctor!!!

I would say: find a new dr and have your hormone levels checked. Home pregnancy tests are reliable for the general public but don't work with everybody in every situation. I had three negatives and was already 10 weeks pregnant!

I just want you to know that its not easy to read a pregnancy test correctly and you have to do it in a time frame, otherwise it becomes + and it is not. About 10 years ago I was working in a clinic and a medical assistant read a pregnancy test wrong, more than once from what I learned from some patients down the line. I found out she did this because I was able to look into a patients medical record and see who told the patient she wasnt pregnant. She came in for a shot, after she had her baby. Sometimes wanting to be pregnant is emotional. Start reading about your body and your ovulation cycle. Then you will be able to determine when you can get pregnant. Take your time, and just let the doctor test you or if you need it for free try at a heartbeat clinic. Best of Luck to you .

Hi Nikki,

I can't say whether you were pregnant or not; you could have been and had an early miscarriage.

I don't know how long you have been trying for another baby, but you might want to go straight to an infertility specialist when you get your new doctor (notice I said "when" not "if"--lol!)

I don't know where you are located. I was in South Bend IN when I was dealing with infertility issues, and I think the name of the practice was OB-GYN Associates. They were linked up with Memorial Hospital. Their big infertility person was a male doc whose first name was Jan. (sorry I can't remember any more--the baby we had there is now 17, and we haven't lived there for 15.5 years or so).

Hope that helps! Good luck!

It is possible to get false positives on pregnancy tests, but very rare to get that many. If it were me, I'd find a new doctor! Then I'd explain to him/her what is going on. It could be that your hormone levels never really got high enough to be considered pregnant, but then I'm not sure why it would show up on a home pregnancy test. I suppose it's possible that your levels dropped that fast, but I'm not sure. Have you ever taken a HPT when you know you're not pregnant? I would be curious to see if you always get a false positive. You can get HPTs really cheap at the dollar store and they work just as well as the more expensive tests. If your doctor is blowing off your concerns, then you need to find a new one. Clearly this person doesn't care enough to even reassure you. IMO, you need to have some bloodwork done to establish a base line for your hormones. Good luck! I know how frustrating it is to have something wrong and not have people believe you.

Nikki, I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you've been having and I hope I can help. I had a miscarriage at five weeks about a year ago. I had a positive test a couple of days after I missed my period, then about a week later I started bleeding. I went and had blood work done that day. They checked my HCG level which were low. Then later that same day my HCG level had gone down even more. It took about a week for the hormones to leave my system. So I would wondered if the blood test showed any HCG at all. If not then you were not pregnant. I'm not sure what would be causing false positives. Good luck in the future.
