I tried it and didn't gain much weight but I did feel horrible. I switched to the patch and have not had any issues.
I was wanting to know if anyone had the depo shot and if it you gained weight on it. I had a baby almost 5 weeks ago and need to start thinking about wht we are going to use for birth control. My hubby wants to get a vasectomy but we dont have the money for that right now. So I need to do something and something that is going to be cheap. Something besides condoms cause whell we have 4 kids so we are not good at using them lol TIA

I was on it for a couple years, gained around 20 pounds, and was a raging lunatic b***h the whole time I was on it. It took me 2 years to figure out that the shot was causing all my mood swings and depression, then it took 3-6 months after the last shot for my moods to return to normal.
Google Depo provera side effects before you decide to take it - it can do some scary stuff to you.
I gained quite a few and had some depression and was very unstable with it.
I loved the patch though it didnt seem to cause any problems...
And I only had to worry about it once a week.
Good luck
A good friend of mine is taking the Depo shot and she has gained quite a bit of weight, I'm not sure how much but probably 20 or more pounds over the last year.
I use a generic version of Seasonale called Jolessa. It's the pill that you take for 3 months and then have a period. So you only have 4 a year. It only costs me $21 every three months with my insurance. I know that some people gain weight on the pill but I am the opposite. The pill suppresses my appetite so I actually gain weight if I go off of it. I thought about Depo but the weight gain issue scared me...
I have been on Depo 2 seperate times. Both times I gained a lot of weight initially and I will never do it again. I have 3 kids also and am uninsured at the moment. Once we are insured again, we will definately go the vasectomy route. I noticed that Walmart and Kroger have a $4 prescription list posted. There were a few oral contraceptives on there. If you want to go that route, maybe you could ask your OB/Gyn to prescribe one of those.
I had it when I first got married. Over one year of shots, I gained 60 lbs. It wasn't worth it.
Should be illegal!!! Like Abbi, I gained 20 pounds; the first 10 almost overnight and then another 10 over the next year. And, also like Abbi, I had rages. But it didn't take me as long to figure out what was going on, so I quit taking them after a year. Then it took a year before I started having periods again and it wasn't until then that the weight started coming off. I continued to have "female troubles" from then on including early perimenopause. Then I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 48. I can't prove it of course, but can't help but think the Depo contributed to both. I wouldn't recommend that stuff for my worst enemy.

I did Depo for 5 years, didn't gain any weight but you need to be prepared for random bleeding. The only other thing is if you want more kids... when I stopped Depo to have my kidos, I didn't ovulate for 14 months, I was freaked out! I am not sure about all of the side effects!
Good Luck!

After my second child i went on the IUD and have to have it removed since it was causing me to bleed a lot. I went on the depo short for 4yrs the first 3 months i had quarter size on my head where my hair had fallen out the good thing was i had long hair to cover it up and it was bald to the skin. I gain about 100lbs in those for 4yrs. And since i wasn't having a period my body was getting all the bad toxin out i had bad acne , till this day i have scars on my face. but i stuck it out till i was ready for my last child , it took us 2 yrs to conceive. And i say she was a blessing for God, i was told that i should have not been on for so long, .... My brother in law went to John peter S. hospital and the did a vasectomy very cheap or free. If you had medicaid you can get your tubes tied and its really not that bad.
I gained 10-15. Loved not having the periods!! My best friend is a special case though. She got Osteoperosus(SP??) apparently her calcium was depleted due to not having a period. Her bone mass was at 50% of what it was suppose to be. This has taken a major toll. She had to take calcium medication to build her bone mass up before she could try and get pregnant. She had to stop taking the meds to get pregnant. She couldn't nurse for too long because she couldn't risk depleting her bone mass too much. Now she has to take meds for several years before she can try and get pregnant again. I didn't have any problems, but I wouldn't risk it now.
I did it once, gained 13 lbs and swore to NEVER to do it again! My husband got a vasectomy done and we couldn't be happier : ) Good luck with finding something that works for you.
I don't know anything about the depo shot. I just wanted to let you know about the vasectomy. My husband just had his done in April. All we had to pay for was our $15.00 copay at our family doctor's office. He did it right there in the office. I was in the room while they did it, it's that simple of a surgery. I wasn't watching, but just trying to be there for my husband.(we all know men are the biggest babies when it comes to that stuff)
Not sure if you have health insurance, but you should definitely talk to your family dr. and see if they can do the surgery, I know it's a lot cheaper than going to a urologist.
Good Luck!
I tried it a couple of years ago. Don't remember gaining weight. I heard it was awesome from my friend who never had a period but i bled the entire time i was on it. It was horrible. I would never do it again. My dr. will not even give it any more. Good Luck.
I was on Depo for years and loved it. I don't recall it making me gain any weight - but if it did, it was minimal. The best part of it for me was the lack of a period. But really talk with your doctor before you start. If you get the shot and have side effects (i.e. headaches, spotting, etc.), you may be stuck with them for the next 3 months. Good Luck. Congrats on the new baby.
