Hi fellow mommies,

I am not sure if this is the right place for this but it never hurts to post and try. I have decided I have wanted to fulfill my passion and desire and become a family/Children/Wedding photographer. I have always been very artistic and love people and love photography and art and before my father died he always said “ You should try to get into photography “ “ I know you will do amazing at it “

Instead I ventured off into the medical field and he was right. My creative mind can not run wild in the hospital setting. Sure I have my degree to fall back on but Its not my passion. Its not what makes my heart run wild with ideas and joy. I have a beautiful 4 year old little girl who loves the camera and I love taking pictures of her and playing around in photoshop with them. I would love to do this for a living.

I really want to find a mentor or someone who can give me knowledge on how to get started. I know I need a good camera, I know I need photo shop and I know you have to be good with people. I also know that in the end its about marketing yourself and your business and running a good business.

I do know that I will also need to build my portfolio and that its not going to happen over night. It could take several months maybe a year before I can even begin to start my own photography business.
I will do what ever it takes. I just want to make it happen. I know it will be hard work.

I really need a mentor someone who can give me knowledge and advice and direction. Someone who is sweet enough to kinda take me under their wing and give me a few pointers.

I’ve done tons of research and asked a few people and some of the best photographers I have met never went to photography school. In fact its not really needed. I know they took some photo shop classes but most all told me they had a mentor. So I guess I am on the hunt to find that special bond I can grow and make with a photographer who will help me get started.

If anyone has any information or websites or any input I would be more than greatful. To hear from you. I would love any websites or software or any thing than can help me learn and grow and achieve my dream. Please feel free to respond here or send me an email.

Thank you and God Bless
Have a Happy and WONDERFUL Merry Christmas!

It's wonderful you are in Texas. "I Heart Faces" is an online group and has get togethers and such on photography in Texas,. They have a website with challenges to help each other better their photography and photo editing techniques.

I would recommend photoshop for editing, but you can do basics for now with picnik.com Lots of tutorials online for both of these.

Also, a lot of these photographers are not that good. They are cropping up everywhere right now, I see their portfolios and am totally shocked b/c they are so awful. Taking a course can give you experience on helping to coach people on posing, exposure, learning your camera, proper editing, framing the subject, photo composition, lense flare, obtaining bokeh...

(he also has a great e-book)

Look at some of the portfolios of top photographers and engagement photography to see what rends are in styling and such.

http://ruffledblog.com/ has great examples.

If you find a good photog in the area, many would offer mentoring opportunities, or can refer you to photog gatherings or continuing classes.

Why not call a good photographer in your area and offer to work there for free in exchange for some basic knowledge/tips/training?
