I think I can help you!!! My son is now 5 months old. He was admitted in the hospital for an operation for laryngo malasia when he was 2 months old. I had breastfed him up until that point with occasional formula for outings or just for supplements because he wasn't full enough from me!! I had discussed this with the ENT who was doing his surgery about him not being full and spitting up. When the Dr. finished his surgery came to the waiting room to tell me how things went and told us about his esophogus was very red and inflamed so much that he took a biopsy of it. So he said he did beleive 100% that he had acid reflux (GERD). He also said that when he refluxes that he aspirates a small amount into his lungs. We had discussed about thickening his milk, but neither of us wanted to take him from breast milk unless it was really an issue.
At this point we decided something had to be done about the spitting up, because it is just like our heartburn....when babies or children refulx it actually eats away at your esophogus!!!! EEEKK!!! They also thought that he had sleep apnea....because when he would reflux he would quit breathing and sometimes choke. When we were leaving the hospital 3 days later I told them I had to do something. They told us to try the thickened milk....with cereal in the milk or prescription thickener like for the elderly. Another Dr. told us about the ENFAMIL AR LIPIL which has the added rice starch in it. They sent us home with some and it has worked wonders!!!! He has been on it pretty well since. He also has to take liquid Zantac. Actually people think milk calms down the stomach but actually the Dr.'s have told us it produces more acid. So avoid an excess or milk or acidic foods or drinks. Like orange juice...(my 2 yr old to this day still can't drink orange juice)....peaches....etc.
The formula is much thicker or can be after it sits for a few minutes before feeds....so you will need larger nipples.....BUT IT WORKS!!! He rarely spits up now and when he does it is just a little because the rice starch actually thickens the spitup before it comes up.....so we don't have a huge mess!!!! TRY IT!!!! If you have any questions about it, pm me because it can be very frustrating!!!!
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!!!! :)
