Want to Relocate

Get a recruiter (it doesn't cost you anything)! I'm a restaurant management recruiter - most of the people I work with are relocating. Look online, find a recruiter that has a lot of searches/needs in Chicago...let her do all the work for you. They already have leads, contacts, and probably know a lot about the area. Unfortunately, a lot of hiring managers just skim over the cover letter. A recruiter can call the hiring manager and say...."I have the perfect candidate for you (and this is why)! She's coming to Chicago in July!!" The recruiters know who's looking and they have a good raport with the very companies you want to get in with....they can negotiate everything for you (pay, start date, benefits, etc). Seriously! find yourself a recruiter.

When we moved to FL, we used family's address closest to the city he was applying for the job in. When we moved to Atlanta, he used a recruiter, they make money if you get hired on someplace. So they really do work hard for you, & it doesn't cost you anything. Also I wouldn't put your address on your resume, just because a lot of companies like to hire local people.

Include a cover letter with your resume stating that you plan on moving to Chicago in July and are looking for a position in your field. There is really no way to do it on your resume.

Hi F., we just moved from the Atlanta area to Vermont. I am working in New Hampshire, but living just over the border. Thankfully I got hired with a company that is very willing to assist in relocating its employees. When you send your application and cover letter, make sure you add something to your cover letter which states you are willing to relocate.

I am not sure if you are married and your husband got a job in Chicago, which is why you are relocating. If that is the case, tell them that you will be moving to Chicago on such and such date. If you just want to move to Chicago and are looking for a job so you can make sure you have something in place before you move, you can let them know that you will be there and able to start after you give notice to your current position.

I got my job because I wanted to move to NH/VT. I accepted my job 12/14, gave notice that my last day at my current job would be 1/25, and started my new job on 2/25. The month I was off allowed me to finish packing, move, unpack, and get my children enrolled in school up here. Most companies willing to hire employees who need to relocate understand there is a time lapse that must occur before you can start in your position.

Good suggestions already, I would just add that you shouldn't put an address on your resume. They don't need it. All they need is an email and phone number. Considering how mobile our society is now, many people even have a number from a different area. This will help them to not skim over you before they even get to reading cover letters.

I think it would be a excellent idea to use a cover letter to inform potential employers of your plans to relocate. Hope this helps and good luck.

If you know anyone living in the Chicago area, ask if you can use their address for your resume. Alot will depend on what you do for a living. For those of us that are secretaries, you will most likely be ignored.

When I moved down here, I found that using temp agencies is the best way to get your foot in the door. Again, that is for clerical work.
