Want to Help a Family or Person in Need

This time of year I always think of how fortunate many of us are to have a roof over our heads, presents for our children etc. My husband and I are going to be moving and in packing found a jacket in great condition that my husband doesn't use anymore. I'd like to donate it but not just to goodwill, to somewhere that I know someone that needs a jacket will get it. it also got me thinking and I"d like to help a family that needs gifts for kids, a Christmas tree, or something of that sort. Its not like I have so much money I don't know what to do with it, we are a regular family but I know if I cut a little here or there, I could help a family that needs it more than we do. Does anyone know anyone that's in need this holiday season? Or know an organization that could help me do this?
Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
What a wonderful attitude you have--the true Christmas spirit! there are so many needy people! You didn't say where you are, but my first suggestion would be that most churches this time of year have some sort of 'angel tree' giving program that would love to either take your donations or put you in touch with someone. In addition, I'd try Samaritan House in San Mateo, Catholic Workers, Hope House (halfway house for drug addiction recoverers) Love Inc, there are so many.

Or you could walk up to a person on the street and hand them the jacket. That's the most direct way. My son (23) loves to talk to homeless people--he says they all have amazing stories.

Bless you for your kind generosity. You truly have the Christmas spirit!

The Cathedral of Faith on Curtner and Canoas Gardens sent a letter out saying that they are low on their toy collection this year. They are helping 1500 families. You can bring an unwrapped toy to the Church this whole weekend. They also need help with people to wrap the presents. Also, Willow Glen Elementary is doing a Warm Coat Drive but today is the last day. You can drop it off in the office. They are on Lincoln and Minnesota.
Thanks,

I believe Sleep Train takes used coats. You can call them to find out if the one near you is doing it. It is called Warm Coat Program.

I'm in contact with several single-mom families in East Palo Alto, and have been collecting gifts for them and their children - if you'd like to contribute, let me know and I can email you their wish lists :). If none of the moms can use your coat (I'm not sure what size it is) I'd be happy to get it to Bread of Life Ministries in East Palo Alto - they see lots and lots of folks in need each day and I'm sure the director (a friend of mine) would know someone who would love it!
