Has anybody purchased a Walmart wooden swingset, specifically the Adventure Playsets? They are just a fraction of the cost ($400-600) of other brands, but we still want to make sure it is a quality swingset. Thanks for the help!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice. We're going to go look at the one in Carrollton and compare the lumber quality to some others. Thanks again!

We had a Walmart Wooden swing set for about 2 years and I didn't have any problems with it. We had a high wind storm and it was picked up and smashed into a lot of pieces, so we have replaced it with a different kind of playset from Sam's club. I think any playset would have been destroyed in that storm, so I would recommend the walmart playset as good quality for the price.

I too was going to buy one, but have found a good deal on a used Rainbow, so I wont be, but the children I baby sit for have one and their mom said absolutely dont get it. The main support beam that holds the swings has broken 2 tiimes now, despite a metal brace for the second one. She also said a few other things have broken, and the only children that have ever played with it are all under 6 (and there is only 3 kids ever at one time) Sorry to be negative, but I am glad we found something different, even though it did cost us about $200 more than we were planning. Good luck ~A.~

I purchesed an Adventure Playest about 4 days ago and am very pleased. I only spent $200!!! It has a tower with a slide, 2 swings, and some other trinket. The set up was much easier than I had anticipated. I worked on it with my husband and it took us about 5-6 hours. I organized the lumber while my hubby put together tower pieces. Make sure to organize lumber properly so that the holes on the wood match up to the diagram. I have had advice given that you need additional anchors b/c the ones you get are real puney. But my 55lb 7 yr old swings real hard (with the factory anchors) and there is no swaying at all. Overall, I am very pleased...even though the lumber is pretty darn soft. Just make sure to pre-drill your holes to prevent splitting. I did a lot of searching and this was def. the best for the price!!!

We purchased one a few years ago. I think this is the 3rd spring that we have had it. It is not the best, but we have not had any problems until the other day. My 6 and 4 year old go crazy on the glider see/saw thing. I think the wood on the top broke on one side because it is bent. No one was hurt because there is a strong plastic wraping around it. We just need to get a bracket to fix it. Other than that we have been happy with it. The girls are on it every day that the weather is nice. We have certainly gotten our money's worth out of it. Our back yard is small and this is the only one that would fit, and we didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a swing set. We paid someone to put it together and that cost about $200, and it was well worth it.

We bought this last year and it was by far our best buy. My 3 year old and my 11 year old are ALWAYS on it. You need to stake it down well or else it will sway and lean. And it takes FOREVER to build, but it is worth the savings. You need at least 2 people and plan to start early in the morning and work until night if you want to get it done in 1 day.

We purchased the Adventure playset with the 2 swings, glider, sandbox area, slide and picknic area, this year. It is solid wood except the slide, swings and glider. It comes in 2 heavy boxes and needs full assembly. It took us 2 days to assemble it. My 3 year old loves it. I didn't want a plastic swingset, so we went with this one and have been extremely happy with it. My only complaint is that we got too many 3 inch deck screws instead of the 2 1/4, but I ran to walmart and bought what we needed, we were only short 5 or so. There is an annual upkeap to it, you have to reseal the wood every summer. I am glad I bought this one, the directions were really easy to follow and each page tells you what you need for the task so you can gather it before you start the task, also there are pictures to help. If you get one, my suggestion is to label and sort all the wood pieces before you start assembly. This helped us move faster. I feel it was well worth the extra money, and it will last.

Lowes and HomeDepot have plans for the wooden playsets. And if your hubby is a pretty good handyman it might take just a little more work than the swingset in a box.
That way you know what you are getting.

I purchased one for my two granddaughters (at the time ages 2 and 4) year before last. Before the first year was out, the wooden pieces were starting to break. I think it is a piece of crap (excuse my language). I wrote to Walmart expressing our disappointment with the piece and they responded that I would have to contact Adventure Playsets. I did that and they ignored me altogether and never responded. I would recommend purchasing a higher quality set . . . especially if you plan for the children to use it for more than one year and if you have boys who tend to be rougher than girls.

Just as a side note: The year after I purchased the swing set, I bought them the 8'-square trampoline from Sams and it is a wonderful piece of equipment. Very well made and they LOVE it!!!

We also have one of these sets in our back yard, and the main support beam for the swings (the part above the glider) has majorly bent. We'll have to go and find something to brace it with. Naturally, the quality of it isn't as good as some of the more expensive brands. But, we knew that from the start. Although, I'm kind of wishing, now, that we would have gotten something nicer. I just wish the good ones weren't so pricey!

We have the one with the canvase tent top. We have had it for a little over a year, so far so good. Of course it is not as good in quality as some of the higher end swing sets, but we knew that when we bought it. We have a 4 yr old that we bought the set for. The biggest problem is having to keep the bigger kids off of it. Anyone over 120 lbs should stay off of it.

my sister purchased one from wal-mart and me and my hubby put that sucker together...it took about three days well one cuz it rained and the other 2 was because it just took that long. so tell ur hubby to get ready and work and it even says on the instructions may take up to 12 hours.the one that my sister purchased came with all the screws, nuts, bolts and everything that u needed except for the electric drill(you better make sure you have one of those). also what helped us was that we sorted all the wood pieces before we started and it seemed to go faster. i think that it is a quality swing set my kids loved it when we would go over there and visit. i hope this helps in making your choice.

Do not waste your money! We have one in our backyard that we put up last year. It took my husband, dad and brother two Saturday's to put together and they did a great job! But a few months ago, one of the supports cracked so my dad bought a 2x4 and reinforced it. And two days ago we were outside and my daughter was in her swing and on of the screws came out and her swing fell sideways. My husband is wanting to send the company pictures of what our 1 year old play set looks like now.

I did not purchase a Walmart set, but when we purchased, we looked. My husband said the wood was about half the thickness. We ended up purchasing at Home Depot, my neibors purchased a very large one from Sams.

We bought a $300 wooden Adventure Playset from Wal-Mart about 3 weeks ago. I would buy it again. It was pretty easy to put together. The instructions said it would take 6 - 12 hours. We sorted all the pieces first, and had it done in 8 hours. Our boys (ages 9 and 4) play on it every day, and for hours at the weekends, and it isn't showing any signs of wear. Even our 16 year old daughter has been on the swings and climbing wall, and it held her easily. It is perfect for us because we didn't want to spend too much in case they either didn't like it or were just really rough on it. My only advice would be to sort the pieces ahead of time, and look at the pictures as well as read the instructions. Some of the things you have to do (like which way round to have the wood etc) is only in the pictures. Good luck!

Have you thought about checking out Craig's List for a higher quality used swing set in your area? I have often barely used baby things for a fraction of the cost. Just a thought...

We have had one for about 2 years. It is pretty good. It might be worth the little bit more to look at the ones at Home Depot and Lowes - I think they even have some kits, and are much less than Rainbow.

We do like ours and it gets lots of use, but I can tell it will not last as long as one of the others.

We have one and we love it. We had it professionally installed though just to make sure it was done right. My mom has one at her house for the kids too and we have had no problems with either one. When my mom got hers one of the boards was warped so we called the company (Adventure playsets) and they sent us a replacement piece ASAP, no questions asked. Considering the kids will play on it for a few years we couldn't justify the price of some of the others. We would recommend the Adventure Playset brand.

We bought one and amazingly it wasn't super hard to construct. It seems to be just as good as the others. My son an I can both play in it (almost 200 lbs total) and it holds up just fine. Also the swings are holding up good and holding our combined weight as well. We bought the $400 with the picnic table, so I don't know how hard the one with the playhouse would be to put together. Good luck!

We were going to get one but my husband wanted to look at them first. He is a very handy do-it-yourself kind of guy. He was very unimpressed with the quality. We ended up not getting one. I guess you get what you pay for.

We just bought the Adventure wooden playhouse from Wal-Mart a few weeks ago for my son's birthday. It took my hubby a long time to put it together...lots of screws!! The wood is a little thinner than what I had hoped and it splintered in a few areas during construction. However, my son LOVES his new playhouse and the house has successfully withstood the severe storms we've had recently. It also looks great in the backyard...

I don't know where you live, but the Wal-Mart in Carrollton (George Bush and Old Denton) has one of the Adventure swing sets assembled in their garden shop if you want to go and see one in person...

We just put my DS's set together yesterday. We topped it off with a cook-out. My perfectionist BIL and his friend put it all together and I must say I am impressed. I'm confident this wooden swing set is not going to fall apart and couldn't have been put together as well as my BIL did. Of course he doesn't want his nephew, or any child, to get hurt on something that was constructed cheaply. My DS played on his set for hours today! Just seeing his BIG smile on his face!

We just bought the one for $599 from Walmart (Atlantis Adventure Playsets). We still need to stake it down so I am not sure how much that will make a difference. It looks very cute and was not too difficult to put together. However, I have found that the the structure (IT SEEMS LIKE THE ACTUAL WOOD KIND OF SWAYS) It has been given so many positive reviews, but I dont know about it. I dont think that you should see the wood moving when kids are playing on it. All the kids are 5 and under too. I would like for it to have been more sturdy. I am wanting to like this structure, but I am hoping we didnt make a bad decision. Maybe we should have gone with a more expensive set.
