My sweet hubby recently painted our bedroom. The wallpaper in our bathroom looks very nice with it, but I would like to change the border. I have never done any sort of wallpapering. Is anyone a "wallpaper expert" out there? Can I remove the border and leave the paper? Is it possible to paper over the border? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
Yes, you can paper over the border, but will need to apply a primer first. Go to your local Lowe's and they can show you what to get.
Wallpaper has recently taken a backseat to unusual texture techniques. I would get rid of the wallpaper by priming and retexturizing and painting. If you do it now, I think you will be much happier when you feel the need to update in the future.
You can take down the border with generic full strength fabric softener and a sponge. This might take your existing wallpaper down as well. Be careful.
I wanted that done too last year and my panter said it could not be done well. He recommended just getting a larger border and putting it overtop the old one. That is what we ended up doing and it looks great.

My husband and I have done lots of wallpaper over the years and I think it will almost be impossible to just change the border. I would say try it, but if it has a good glue based backing then it will be really tough to get up. Personally I do not suggest putting up border over border. In my opinion it won't look as nice and if you ever decide to get rid of the wallpaper completely it will be a nightmare to take all of those layers off. Good Luck, Pam
If your border is on top of the paper and a border adhesive was used you should be able to wet a sponge, run it over the border's edges and very carefully pull the border off. Warm water usually works best. If it doesn't come off that easily, be very careful removing a little more forcefully. You might get some DIF (Home Depot or Lowes) and try that. It could lift the paper underneath, in which case you would use a little seam repair or paper adhesive (also at HD) to seal anything that's coming up. Let dry completely and then put another border on. I would not recommend papering over the border because most border adhesive is not strong enough to hold the weight of more paper on top of it.
