Walkie Talkies for Vacation

Has anyone used walkie talkies as a long range monitor while on vacation? We stay at a house on the beach but our regular monitor does not work outdoors. We're also going to NC this summer and we thought it would be helpful to radio back to the house if we forgot anything - since the beach is 200 yards or so from house there. If you can, please recommend a brand/model and let me know if it has an open line function (so you don't have to hold the button down). Thanks!

What can I do next?

We didn't use them for vacation but we have used them at our house.

We have some Motorola ones that are great. We used them as a novelty before we all had cell phones. The range was good...I am about a mile from the community pool. Daughter would walk there or out on the bike trails and stay in touch.

Great idea. But since daughter got her cell, the walkie talkies are in the cabinet and we text or call all the time. Even from upstairs to downstairs, lol.

We have the Motorola ones. We love them. We have four and gave each of the kids one in Disney, if they got lost they were to use them and they did. I really can't say how far they work but they also worked from car to car on the highway.

I use these kind of walkie talkies as a baby monitor and they work really well for us. We got them at Best Buy and they have several different models and features. I think we spent about $50 and they do have the open mic function. I turn on the open mic for the one in the baby's room and the other I keep that option off. I think ours have a range of 9 miles. We wouldn't go that far away but I don't think there was one with less coverage. We do occassionaly pick up other walkie talkies but then we just change to a different channel.

What ever you do, do not get the 2 mile range ones. We have the 2 mile range motorolas and I wouldn't give you 2 cents for them. They just aren't strong enough to pick up in places like malls. Get the longest range ones possible.
