I want to have a walk-in tub installed for my senior mom. Has anyone ever done this? Can you recommend a company? Thanks Moms.
Moms, as usual you came thru for me. You gave alternatives, I hadnt thought of. Whst I decided to do is...i found the tub at Costco for $2000.00 cheaper than anywhere else. I don't know anything about the walk-in tubs, but my 87 yr. old mom is doing very well with an over the tub bench seat,helps you to safely get into the tub, and we also installed a hand held shower for her convenience. When she was in occupational therapy after hip surgery, their practice bathroom had all types of equipment, which can be purchased most anywhere, including handles, supports for the bath. maybe they can help. There are assistance programs for helping to do home modifications in the city. You could try contacting the City of Chicago, or the county you live in.
Maybe her doctor even has someone they could recommend? Or you could contact a rehab institute like RIC (Rehab Institute of Chicago) or Assisted Living.
good luck--seems you have a lot on your plate! A walk-in or roll-in shower could really help. You could also ask her doctor for a referral to an occupational therapist that can do a home safety evaluation. A good OT can help you see things around the home to prevent falls!
My one caution about going with Costco is that this is a new product for them. While they are great about giving credit, exchanges, or refunds, how are you going to give a refund if this product is defective? You will have to tear it out and return it -- at your expense. Paying a little extra money now for a warranteed product by a company that's been in business for a while and done a lot of installations may save you some grief down the road.
You're a great daughter, first of all! I helped my 82-year old Mom redesign her bathroom and a part of that was replacing her bathtub with a walk-in. It was more economical than either one of us imagined. If your Mom's tub is the standard size, Home Depot sells a liner that is the exact size of a tub. You can invest in a sliding glass door, but my Mom just opted for a shower curtain, which works fine because there is a small lip on the liner that keeps the water in its place. As one of the other posters suggested, we also replaced her showerhead with one that has a light-weight handheld option. She loves the whole setup!
