Waking in the Night

My 9 month old son has always slept well through the night - 11 to 12 hours. However, he is now waking up crying either shortly after I put him down or even a few hours after. I don't think it is teething because we have already been through that (he has 7 teeth already).

Usually I can go in, rub his back, put his paci in and he falls back asleep for the night but lately he screams and cries and needs to be picked up and consoled and sometimes that doesn't help for long. He will wake up again a few hours later. One night he was up for 3 hours! Has anyone else run into this problem? I have done the cry it out thing a long time ago but it is hard to do when it is midnight and all you want to do is sleep! However, i don't want to get in the habit of rocking him to sleep. HELP!

What can I do next?

I have been going through the same thing and I have determined that it is teething! The good news is that it gets better on its own! You might want to try giving Tylenol before bed or Oragel/teething tablets before bed. I know it hard when you are finally getting a good nights rest and then all of a sudden - CHAOS again! Good luck!

Is he teething? My baby did the same thing starting around 8 months - turns out he was getting 4 teeth at once - and it seems like it hurts them the most during the night.

Almost everyone awakens at some point in the night. The thing about babies is they have to learn to go back to sleep nicely. It's a hard thing for some of them to learn. I would like to suggest that you definitely go in and console him, but try your hardest to avoid picking him up- that can become a habit that is hard to break and he will start "needing" it. If you can put the side of the crib down, do so and lean in to hug him. If you can't, I'm not sure what to do- it's so weird that some of them have sides that don't go down. He will try his hardest to get you to pick him up, but don't let him force you to- just love on him and assure him that you're there and will always be there when he needs you. It's probably teething, too- Ibuprofen always worked great for us- we gave it to him before bed every night during teeth-breaking-through time.

My 7 month old is doing the same thing. Everyone on here says it's teething, but I don't think it is. She's already got 6 teeth, so I know what to look for there. I usually lay her down at about 10 and she's been getting up at around 1am ot be nursed. I think it's a mobility thing. She's pulling up now and crawling, so I think it's hard for her to lay still anymore. Good luck!
