Resolve is the best I've found. You may also want to try a pet odor remover afterward.

White vinegar!!!! Your house will smell like a salad for a little while but it cuts the vomit smell. My mom passed this advice to me and her mom passed it on to her. You can't beat over 100 years of advice. Good luck.

Not the most chemical friendly, but my DD has Grade IV reflux and use to puke if you looked at her hard. LOL...... We used resolve and loved it..... It takes out the stain and to me the smell was even bigger.... It takes it out too and we have cream carpet. It got out the Strawberries that came back up, so I know it can get out anything.

I had this happen to me. I made a paste of baking soda and vinegar and put this on the area I wanted to clean. Leave it on there until dry and then vacuum up. The carpet did not smell afterwards and I did not see any discoloration. I think I ended up treating the area 2 times.

B.,

My kids are older and I don't have a problem with them. But I do have two dogs that have issues!!!

My lab throws up whenever he gets into something he shouldn't. & the other yahoo, got into something earlier this week from our bathroom "garbage can" I am too embarraased to say what it was. But anyways, she had the runny poops for two days!!! On my NEW carpeting!!!!!

And it's beige. Anyways, Melaleuca has these wonderful products called "PreSpot" to treat stains & a super duper product called "Sol-U-Mel" also treats stains and gets the smell out. It's like Febreeze, but it actually deodorizes instead of masking the smell. Let me tell you, together they work like a champ!! I don't know what I would do without them.

No stain! No smell!!

If you need more info let me know. They have some pretty awesome stuff!

Im a huge fan of the Dawn dish soap and water scrub. It gets anything out. Just mix a little dish soap in with a bucket of water and scrub (i use a washcloth) I used it recently for cat poop all over and it did the trick. Hopefully the smell wont last long after you get the barf out. Good Luck!

I have always used a product called Totally Toddler Nursery Stain and Odor Remover in the nursery aisle at Wal-mart, until my local Wal-mart quit stocking it, so I looked at the ingredients on the back and was surprised to see how simple it was to mix my own. In a spray bottle, I mix at least 3 parts isoproply alcohol to 1 part (or less) water, and a squirt of Dawn dishsoap. The mixture should have a light alcohol smell and not be soapy. I also used it for a laundry pre-treater. It's great on any organic stains such as baby formula, food, poop, blood, vomit, and grass stains - in the laundry or on the carpet. It's the only thing I have found that completely removes vomit smell and leaves a pleasant smell behind! For the carpet, I just spray it on and blot it up with the heavy duty shop paper towels. Two kids and 13 years later, my light taupe plush carpet still looks (and smells) like new!

If none of the other tips work I would hire a professional carpet cleaner. I had one do an amazing job getting very disgusting dog vomit out of the carpet. I thought I was going to have to replace the carpet, but they saved me. I can give you their number if you want.

Nature's Miracle--great for vomit, poop, pee, etc. You can get it at most stores. I can't remember if Target still carries it, but I know for sure it's at Petsmart.

My son just had the flu and threw up all over our off-white carpets for two days. In desperation, my husband went and rented a Rug Doctor from the grocery store ($25 for 24 hours). To our great delight (and some surprise), it worked like MAGIC. Our four year old carpets now look absolutely brand-new because it took out not only the vomit stains but any old ground-in stains that we had previously been unable to remove with any other method. We're lookng forward to a time when we can rent it again to do the entire house!!

I would have to go with Jill's answer. I am a Melaleuca customer, the Sol-u-mel is great for getting stains out it also smells great. If you can't get the Melaleuca, go to a natural foods or organic market and get a stain remover from there.
The stuff you buy in a regular store, has so much stuff that's not good for us. They have been known to cause cancer, bring on asthma, ADD/ADHD just to name a few. They also did a study, and had some people wearing rubber gloves, they still found the chemicles leeching into their blood stream. Look on the back of any of those bottles, with all the warnings, Danger and hazzardous labels on there, they aren't putting them on there just to make them look pretty. The government regulates so many other things, why not household cleaaners? They shouldn't be allowed to put that stuff in cleaning supplies. A enviromental protection agency recently checked the blood of 200 newborn baby's, and found startling amount of chemicles in their blood stream, just from what's in every day household cleaning products that the mothers used while they were pregnant.

Hi B.,
This has always worked well for me: Clean the area well with a little dish detergent in a bucket of water to make sure you get up all the solids, then go over it with white vinegar solution. The white vinegar will neutralize the odors and is a good antibacterial (also great in the washing machine). For any remaining stains spray with Windex - the original formula - and scrub in a circular motion with a towel. The Windex is amazing - it cleans even old stains.

If you are lucky enough to have a steam cleaner you just get up the solids as best you can with towels, blot up as much moisture as you can with the towels and then steam clean.

If you don't have a steam cleaner (we rented every so often) then go through the same process to get up solids and as of the liquid as you can first (and throw the towels straight into the washing machine!) then use the enzyme based products that you'd use to get rid pet stain soil. Nature's Miracle is a particular favorite of ours. Just follow the instructions on the bottle. Also, we usually try to buy these chemicals at PetSmart or Petco because price is pretty good there.

No great suggestions, but it sounds like you have plenty. Just an FYI...barbasol and other shaving cream can bleach (I know this from running a camp and having shaving cream fights...and having a shirt change color), so while it may work, you might want to use it only on really light carpeting.
