Anything you don't mind getting paint, glue, glitter, etc. on that doesn't look like it came out of the rag bin. Also be prepared for snot (cold season), crumbs, sticky fingers, and sweat/dirt/mud from recess.
Hi mamas! I have a silly question... I am a "new school mom". My DD just started Kindergarten this fall and I have put my name on the volunteers list for her classroom. Up to this point the teacher has not asked for anyone, b/c she wanted to get the kids in a routine, etc before bringing parents in to help. I just got an email asking if I would be available to come in Wednesday. I'm super excited to volunteer in my DD's classroom... BUT am not sure what I should wear as a parent volunteer?!?! I'm not one of those crazy mom's that would wear something completely inappropriate on any given day, let alone to my child's school. I guess I'm just not sure if I should dress more professionally... as in on the lines of a teacher? or are jeans and a nice shirt/ blouse appropriate? Any advice/ input would be appreciated. TIA

If you have to change to e-mail or contact the teacher, ask her what you'll be doing. This might help you decide. In addition, if it's kindergarten, you might be on the floor, so jeans and a nice shirt would certainly be fine. BE COMFORTABLE, whatever you choose! I LOVE volunteering and working w/ the teachers and kids, too!!!
Appropriate?
As long as your tush and boobs are covered, you should be fine.
What would you wear to run around a playground or use glue and crayons around a bunch of kids?
You're not going to a fashion show....it's kindergarten. They aren't interviewing you for a teaching position, you are helping out in the classroom.
Pants, shirt, shoes.
You've got it covered!
Have fun!!!!!
Just dress casually. I just dress like I always do... when I volunteer at my Daughter's school. That is how all the volunteers dress... everyday casual, nothing special. Just clean and groomed. Oh, and nothing with necklines that will pop open when you are bending over! Or kids will see your boobies or bra!
And yes, don't wear anything "dry clean". Just clothes you don't mind if getting dirty.
Here where I live, its either jeans or shorts and whatever t-shirt or top... and flip flops or sandals.
You do NOT have to dress like a Teacher.
You are a "Mom Volunteer."
It's kindergarten. You may be crawling on the floor or working with dirty stuff. Dress casual. I would wear jeans and a shirt that you won't care about if it gets dirty. Dress comfortable.
Jeans and a nice shirt always worked for me. Sommer dresses if it were May or June. Have fun, they were the best times!!
I wear jeans and a tshirt... whatever you are comfortable in. You don't need to dress professional.
I volunteered at both my kids classes until 4th grade and I always just wore jeans and a nice shirt or sweater. None of the moms dressed up at our school, just wore regular everyday stuff.
I wouldn't think you need to dress "professionally" at all! Just wear a pair of slacks or Dockers and a sweater or blouse. Whatever is comfortable! Maybe not sweat pants and a sweatshirt but a long sleeved jersey and jeans are OK too!
wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting paint or other kindergarten "dirt" on you. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes like tennis shoes or loafers.
Be sure your blouse or t-shirt is not to low cut and not see through.
The teacher will appreciate you being there and will not mind if you are in jeans or not. (prob best for jeans since you will most likely be on the floor a lot.) But really anything is fine
Good for you and ENJOY!!
You might ask more experienced moms what they usually wear to volunteer at school. Does the school have a dress code for the teachers?? Some schools don't allow teachers to wear jeans, so I would ask. I think I would dress comfortably with flat shoes and slacks and a nice shirt. I would be prepared to sit on the floor with the kids because a lot of learning goes on with the kids sitting on the floor. You might also email the teacher and see if there are any special activities going on that you should dress for --helping with playground duty?? (maybe a coat and gloves in cold weather) --helping with painting--(maybe plan to bring an old shirt to cover your clothes)
Congratulations and thanks for making the decision to help in your child's school.
Hi, I'm a room parent and I wear a nice pair of jeans and a blouse or sweater depending on the weather. Just wear comfortable shoes and give the teacher plenty of help and you'll be fine.
AH
I usually wear Jeans and a polo or nice cute character shirt ( tinker bell usually) Don't wear a skirt that's knee length or shorter cause they can look up your skirt if you are reading to them , you in chair them on the floor in front of you.
Casual, not professional. No cleavage. Nice, clean jeans and shirt are fine. No perfume.
As a kindergarten teacher myself I say jeans and an appropriate top are just fine. Our volunteers come in dressed casual - no need to dress professional, especially in kindergarten! It's possible you may be doing some messy activities with the kids, so you don't want to wear anything too nice :) Have fun!!
Wear something comfortable but classy. A pair of slacks that you can bend, sit, run, etc...and a simple, 3/4 sleeve or shorter, non low cut top. When you bend over and can see down your shirt everyone else can too. I think as long as you look okay it's fine. I would not wear any denim, many schools find it too casual.
casual, jeans or casual pants, shirt, sweater, you'll be cleaning mess most of the time or supervise kids during recess.
Unless your child attends a school that requires a uniform, you should wear something that is nice and presentable yet will be comfortable for you no matter what situation you find yourself in (on the floor with them, doing crafts with them, etc.). The important thing is that you're willing and able to give your time and your DD will be super excited to have her mom there sharing her day and the other students will be very happy to know "so&so's mom" and to have another adult to interact with during the day. Just be sure to enjoy your time there and soak it all in! These days go by way too fast...
As long as you look neat and causal you are probably fine. You want to be able to be comfortable enough to play with the kids. I worked with kids a a social worker and it involved a lot of field work. Even as a "professional" office casual clothing was appropriate for everything but court appearances. Docker type pants or jeans and a nice looking shirt should be fine and shoes you can chase the kids in, of course.
Good question! Haha! I kinda dressed up when I went to volunteer, I didnt want to look all yucky in front of my kids friends. I wore leggings and a cute long shirt. Um....I was constantly bending over and worried little ones were going to get a shot of my butt, and I also got orange pant (we were panting pumpkins) all over my pretty shirt. So, my advise, wear jeans and a cute short sleeve shirt, just slap some makeup on and some earrings and your good to go. You should be comfortable, and wear clothes that your not worried about getting dirty! I ordered school shirts, I will probably wear a school Tee next time. :)
Im a new Kindergarten Mama too! ;)
I'd say nice jeans/khakis and a decent shirt (I'd make sure the shirt is not see-thru and doesn't show cleavage or bra straps!). I thought the idea of a school shirt was good (in fact I may try this or at least school colors!). I've helped out at the winter parties and Valentine Day parties but I came straight from work where I get to dress casually and it seems I've always worn black docker type pants and a sweater. You may want to layer too in case it gets warm in the classroom. I think the teachers dress more casually these days too, if that helps! Awesome that you can help out. Good luck and have fun!!!
My daughter is in 10th grade and I've been volunteering at her schools since K. It is something I love to do.
I am neatly dressed, not overly, just something I would wear on any given day at home. I don't own sweats and would not wear those at my own home... I usually have nice jeans/pants and a nice top with some sandals or closed toe leather shoe.
Keep in mind, at the elementary level you are doing a lot of hands on activities, might be on the floor, etc.
Whatever you wear, enjoy yourself.
When in doubt, over dress. I prefer my parents to come in with nice pants on, no jeans or sweats. It is good to wear pants especially when working with kids that age since you may be doing a lot of kneeling and sitting on the floor. Another big thing to remember about your top is that as you are bending over to help students, it doesn't gape open and give everyone a view of your chest. I hope that helps. Most of all, have fun!
