Volunteer Work for Kids?

Hi,

It is really important to my husband and I to teach our children the importance of helping others and being charitable.

Is there anyplace I can bring my preschool-age children to do volunteer work with me?

Besides doing the Angel Tree and dropping old toys off at Goodwill, I was hoping to actually let them start doing something for others who aren't as fortunate as we are.

I know of several agencies that offer programs for older kids, but I am specifically interested in something my 4 1/2 and 3 1/2 year-old kiddos can do with me.

Thanks so much!

The Woman to Woman pregnancy resource center in Denton is always looking for help in their resale shop called Twice as Nice (sorting donations, cleaning, etc.). It's on loop 288 in Denton, north of McKinney street.
Also, there are likely opportunities in your own local church.
Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (www.cpch.org) has one workday each month where volunteers come help with their grounds -- little kids could water plants.
Check out the "volunteer connection" link on the United Way of Denton County website at www.unitedwaydenton.org. Many of the opportunities listed will say what kind of volunteer it's appropriate for -- groups, individuals, adults, youth, etc. You can likely tell from the description of each opportunity whether it would be appropriate for your children to come along. If you can't tell, there's usually a contact number.
You could even come up with your own way to help a local organization and propose it. For example, Cumberland Children's home also provides housing and counseling for a handful of single parent families. However, they do not supply household needs like they do for the children who live there without their parents. Maybe there's an opportunity for you and your kids to provide a meal, or Friday snacks, or something...and the kids could help prepare the meal/snack, then go with you to drop it off.

And, there are some neat opportunities for local missions if you look at http://www.thevillagechurch.net/adults/missions/comm_miss...

Also, ask your local public schools. Our are always doing community activities and I'm sure they woule love to get help from their future students.

My children and I do work with Assisted Living centers in Denton.
They always need help.
It's an activity where you can help and also the little ones can participate.
It started because I was tired of listening to my ten year old ask for an I-pod, cell phone, Justice clothes. Everything was becoming "material" for her and at this age I wanted her to experience the joy of serving.
Now she does still ask for all those things :) but I believe she has become a little more aware of material things.
My four year old loves it! She was shy at first and now if we bake cookies or a cake she wants to bake an extra one just to drop it off for someone.
