What about a food bank? The one near me has some volunteer opportunities for kids. All the volunteers had to go to a training session and then they could help sort food, pull weeds in the garden, etc.
My kids volunteered at an elderly rehab facility this weekend and it was truly awesome. I would like to do something like this monthly. Any ideas on volunteer opportunities for kids ages 6yrs and 8yrs old???
I would go back to the same facility we went to this weekend, but, it was quite far and I'd like something closer.
Thanks in advance!

You can sign up to volunteer at your nearest Humane Society. The kids can't do it alone, you have to be present with them, and our location (probably all of them) requires you (adult together with any children you are bringing) to take a short class on procedures, do's/don'ts, etc.
The kids cannot hold the leash for a dog/puppy, but YOU can and the kids can play with them. Or they can go into the cat area and pet/play with the kitties.
My kids LOVE going there.
Convalescent home? (not sure if that's diff from the elderly rehab
facility you went to.)
Hospital (children's ward). Call your local hosp & check.
we did a beach clean up with our kids. Everyone had on gloves and we picked up trash. After we had a BBQ and got to enjoy the beach. If you are not near the beach you could do similar at a park. Check with your city to see if you can get something going if it is not available. Also check with the local boy scouts. They always have stuff going on. And if a teen boy is working on his Eagle they are responsible for organizing a community opportuninty so you may find something there.
Check out the group Wee Volunteer (they are on Facebook). It is all about colunteer opportunities for kids!
Each February the boys and I canvass for Heart and Stroke. We all go together and the boys do the talking. It is an excellent way to get to know the people in the neighbourhood.
We do an annual "Blanket and Towel Drive" for our local Humane Society. They always need old blankets and towels to use as dog beds. We make up a flyer and set a date to collect everything. The flyer makes it clear that we are looking for old, torn, or bleach-stained items that are going to be used for bedding. Most people have a few things that fit the bill laying around and do not mind getting rid of them. Then you swing around the neighborhood picking things up and bring it all to the shelter. My 4 year old has helped with that since he was 2.
My daughter and I deliver food for Meals on Wheels. They are always looking for volunteers.
find something everyone is interested in - but there are age restrictions for a lot of volunteering. for example, none of the animal shelters in denver will accept under 18, even with parent present. but the zoo in CO springs had kids as young as 13 doing interpretative volunteering. so, this may take some research.
we adopted a greenway that we clean up as a family quarterly and then take what comes by as we can.
call your church for suggestions too.
