Vitamins for 1 Year Old

Hi Moms,

I need opinions on using vitamin supplement drops for my son. He is now completely off formula and taking one bottle (8 ozs milk) at night time. He eats well etc., but I worry that he is not getting enough vitamins now that he is only drinking 8 ozs milk and no formula. He won't drink milk but from the bottle, I am in the process of trying to break this habit since he is associating the milk with the bottle. Do you think it is necessary to give him the vitamins? In my mind I am thinking it wouldn't hurt either way, but wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks!

I highly recommend vitamins for the little ones. I give my son 3 and a half years olf Michael's Pediavites which you can get at a health food store. Once I started giving them to him, he quit getting sick once a month. I also give my eight mth old daughter who has Down syndrome a child's dose of Pana C315. It's a very complex multivitamin. Her development skyrocketed after we started her on them. They are both great vitamins.

If your doctor is concerned about a deficiency then I would certainly talk to him and make a decision together, however if you are just wondering whether he needs it or not I would say as long as he is eating a balanced diet and a variety of foods he'll be fine.

My pediatrician gave me a prescription for vitamin drops when my son was 1 and I tried to give them to him. He wanted nothing to do with it even when I "hid" it in applesauce or juice. I finally decided it wasn't worth the fight since he pretty much would eat anything I put in front him ......unless of course it had medicine hidden it!

Good luck,
K.

Hi, Our son just turned one too, but our doctor said he should have at least 16 oz of milk every day. He was EBF to a year, and the doctor had us start giving him poly visol by around 3 months. After 6 months, he had us switch to the poly tri visol - the one with iron. The baby didn't mind the first vitamins, but the kind with iron definitely aren't as pleasant - I know, because I tried them too!! yuck. It's good for him though, and just takes a couple of seconds to give him each day, so I consider it worth it.

If your baby is eating an otherwise healthy diet he should be okay without additional vitamins for another year or so.

Before giving him vitamins of any kind you should check with your pedi to make sure it's okay.

This is a question for your Dr. I would not give any baby any vitamin supplement without the Drs say so. Their bodies are so small and they can very easily over dose on them. THere are lots of vitamins that can do serious damage if too much is in the system.

More then likely, he is getting what he needs. Most baby and toddler food are fortified so vitamins are not necessary. If he is eating a balanced diet he should be getting what he needs. Contrary to popular opinion, kids DO NOT need cows milk to be healthy. In fact, in lots of kids, it is detrimental to their health because they are drinking too much milk and not eating enough food to get the right amount of varied nutrients that they need. 8oz of milk per day is just fine.

Although my baby is breastfed and not bottle, my Doc wanted me to put my daughter on vitamins since she was born. There are two types that I know of, Poly-Visol and Tri-Visol. You can either find them at Walgreens or HEB, probably even Walmart or Target. These were recommended by my Ped.

I second Karen's advice. You pediatrician will likely ask some of these questions at your son's 1 year check-up (assuming he hasn't had it yet). That being said, many doctors will want you to add some sort of supplementation just because children this age are notoriousy picky eaters and it is sort of a better safe than sorry mentality.

Some of the best advice I got about my daughter's diet was not to look at what she ate in a day but rather what she ate in a week and over a month's time. It can take the stress out of making sure EVERY meal has all the components. She has never been a picky eater, but can get a little fixated on one thing (she may come by it naturally) and will eat and eat and eat it--lucky for me she has had little exposure to things I don't want her to have. So I just spend a small fortune on things like Greek yogurt.

Shaklee are the very best vitamins on the market - they test the raw materials and then test the finished product - something no one else does (at least not that I could find) AND they continue to test them till their expiration date!!! They make a liquid vitamin for kids. They're wonderful..

What type of milk is he drinking? I as a mom would suggest asking the doctor. I gave vitamins to my children until they were 5.

hi L.,
Personally, I think one year old is too young to take the bottle away- the exception would be if it was is choice. He needs his milk for strong bones and teeth- unless you supplement with other foods high in calcium- such as cheeses, yogurt- fresh fruits, lots of green veggies etc.......and before I would give over the counter vitamins to a child that young I would consult my pedi------there are a lot of over the counter vitamins that are produced with additives that are harmful and actually do no good at all- so I would get some that are recommended by a Dr.
good luck and blessings

Of course I'd consult your pedi on this, but we've given our son (who will be 3 in Oct.) Poly-visol for a few years. I think we started him on them when he was either 6 months or 1 year. Just put a dropper in his milk, shake it up & they never know the difference. My son was BF & supplemented w/ formula until 1 year, then we went to Vitamin D milk. I get mine at HEB in the vitamin section. Hope this helps!
