Vitamin for 2 Yr Old Boy

My son seems to be getting pickier with foods since he turned 2 in December. He still eats well, and he loves fruits. However the meals are starting to become smaller and less choices. I hide vegtables, so for example he gets spanich in the tomato sauce for pasta and most everything he eats is natural and organic. Part of the pickiness is not wanting to sit and eat, he is more intrested in runing around and playing than eating. The other reason I think is snacking, he'd rather snack on things like fruits, toddler cookies, crackers than have a meal. I was wondering which vitamins other mom's are using and suggesting to make sure they are no lacking anything.

What can I do next?

My doc prescribed some vitamins with flouride. I'm not into adding flouride so I went to the health food store and got infant/toddler vitamins from there. They are liquid from a dropper. So, you can add it to food or juice to hide it. Hope that helps!

Sounds like typical 2 year old behavior. All my kids did the same & I am going through it now with my 2 year old monster.

My kids take a multi vitamin with flouride as prescribed by the doctor. In addition they get acidopholus & echinacea w/ vit. C daily. And it is mandatory that they finish their orange juice in the morning.

I'm not convinced that vitamins are the solution to picky eating behavior! As my grandmother once said, "they haven't figured out all the nutrients in food yet". This still holds true. Two year olds are busy exploring the world and perhaps don't need as much food as you might think. You really need to look at food intak over the course of a week, not a day to get the big picture on your child's food.

I would take a big look at juice intake and toddler cookies and cracker intake. These are empty calories that can add up to no appetite at meal time. They are also foods that can be "damp forming" according to Chinese medicine. One of the best books I've got in my collection on this topic is "Keeping kids Healthy with Chinese Medicine" by Bob Flaws.
It will change the way you look at food. When I took a one year course in Chinese Herbal Medicine many years back, I thought I would be learning about herbs. Instead I learned about the properties of FOOD that go way beyond carbs, protein, fat, calories and vitamins.
This simple book by Flaws can really have a positive impact on your child's food and health for the next decade. Check it out!

I also have a downloadable e book on my website about Picky Eaters. Hopefully you won't need it! Don't worry about the vitamins, just keep your eye on the big picture, FOOD and all the nutrients will take care of themselves! We have no real research that shows weather these vitamins actually do anything. Most are synthetic petroleum derivatives.
Trust mother nature instead, she's been around a lot longer!

Good Luck!

Hi P..
Just wanted to say that I use the Gummi Vites from Trader Joe's. My son loves them. However - I know the dentist would prefer we didn't use these. (We didn't discuss it I just know she don't approve of things that stick to his teeth.) His changes in eating patterns is absolutely normal. My son was a star eater until after about half-way through his 2s. He's now almost 4 and we're happy he eats plenty of fruits at least. He still eats vegetables sometimes it takes work on our part. We also found that the Trader Joe's juice Green Plant is a good way to get him vegetable vitamins. We water it down because it's really rich. My son loves it. Good luck! I am told that their palates starts to expand again around age 5. We'll see. Some people never do and others start back up again. until about 2 1/2 my son loved all kinds of foods... but I have read over and over again that it's normal for them to go towards a much smaller assorment of food. Has to do with becoming more aware and more selective about everything. Good luck!

my doctor prescribed multivitamin with flouride. Talk to your pediatrician, I think they all prescribe the same thing.

My son will be 2 years old in May and he also he is a very picky eater. My son just started to want the foods we eat. We were shocked on Easter he actually tried ham with applesauce. So give it time and he will come around with the eating. I have been giving him the Vitamins from the Peds. and he loves them. Ask your Peds. for them because they have the fluoride in them.

I use Aussie Pals from Melaleuca. Both my 1 year and 3 year like them. They are small and fruity.

P.,

I use the multi vitamins from costco , its a chewable and they are dinosaur shaped,

the first few times they didn't like them, but after a few offers they started to like them,

I don't think there is any one vitamin that is perfect,

best bet is healthy foods, what worked to get my kid eating was apple picking, and visits to the farms, watching farm videos helped them want to eat healthy foods,

they seem to like it when the cows are eating them..LOL

Be sure that any vitamin your offer is food-based, and not produced synthetically. A food based vitamin will be much better absorbed and utilized by your son's body. I use Nature's Plus "Source of Life" Animal Prade vitamins from my local health food store. All that said, vitamin supplements are not the answer for a picky eater. Stop offering the empty foods like cookies and crackers - you're only enabling a toddler! Only offer the foods you actually want him to eat. Try snacks of nuts, cheese, and cut-up veggies. If he's really hungry, he'll try these things and see that they're good. You are his source of good nutrition and eating habits for a lifetime. If you want him to value family mealtime, then you have to value his presence at the table, eating (or at least trying a bite of) EVERYTHING you make. We had the same problem with getting our 2 year old son to stay at the table. After you're done eating, try reading books or playing games at the table - something that gives him impetus to stay at the table until this fun time happens. We also told him that he could not get down until he tried a bite of each food we had eaten. Eventually (and it took weeks, even months, he's really stubborn) he learned just to eat everything while it was still warm and yummy. I don't push something he really dislikes (tomatoes make him gag), but I do make him sit and eat. Good luck!
