Hi Moms- I am the mother of 2 and pregnant with my 3rd. I posted on here previously regarding flu shots. My son has an egg allergy, therefore he cannot get the shot. And I've never had a flu shot before. I have decided that I am NOT going to get the shots this season.
I caught Dr. Oz on the View this morning. He mentioned if you dont want to get the flu shot you should at least take a Vitamin D supplement. That sounds easy enough to do. And he says it proven to help. Of course, I know this is not a guarantee that I wont get sick, but I'll take whatever little help I can get!
Here is my question... I am taking a prenatal vitamin with 400IU of Vitamin D. Is that enough? If I take a Vitamin D supplement on top of that, can that be too much?? Also, how much should I give my kids??? Will a Flinstones Vitamin be enough??
Any ideas??
THANK!!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your responses. I talked to my pediatrician yesterday and she recommended a simple multi-vitamin since pure Vitamin D in liquid form isnt always easy to find. And the tablet isnt easy for little ones to swallow. I see my OB next week, so I'll inquire then about myself.

And Melissa A: I am fully aware this isnt a "medical" website. And I would never trust medical advice given from any website. This is a platform for moms to ask opinions, experiences, and ideas of other moms. I didnt realize I needed to add a disclaimer that I would be consulting my OB and Pediatrician, in order to not be judged. You could have very nicely said, "Perhaps your OB/PEDI would be the best place to answer your question." When offering your opinion, please try being nice.

I would not be giving my child Flintstones. There are much better, more bio-available products on the market - mostly at your health food store. (Unfortunately, most of them taste awful.)

Isagenix makes a children's vitamin that blows the others out of the water. It has 400 IU's of vitamin D (100% of daily requirements).

Please contact me if you'd like more info. I've enclosed the supplement facts on it.

i would add some vitamin C to that too, also suppose to boost immune system. i just started giving my kids a new vitamin--Animal Parade Kid Immune Booster. i found it at a natural foods store, but did see it online too. it has A, C, E, zinc and some other stuff. i also give them extra viatmin C and cod liver oil which had vitamin D in it too. not the same as fish oil which is omega 3 and 6. my kids all suffer from respiratory issues and cod liver oil is supposed to be good for that. i have my fingers crossed.

The warning that one poster gave is correct. ALWAYS check with your doctor before taking any supplements especially while pregnant, but I think this site is for the purpose of sharing information and opinions so here is some info that I can share.

I am pregnant too and am a little concerned about swine flu and getting the swine flu vaccine once it is available. In looking for other options, I have been doing a little research. Here is a link to one article that I found and at the bottom it has recommendations on how much vitamin D to take.

http://health.usnews.com/blogs/on-women/2009/08/05/how-mu...

Although vitamin D is fat soluble which means you can overdose on it, I think that the dose has to be extremely high before toxicity is likely. Some will say 3800 IUI is the limit, but most feel that it is much much higher than that. I think that if you take 1,000-2,000 IUI you should be safe. Also make sure that it is a vitamin D3 source (it should say on the label).
You could take just 800-1,000 IUI and then you will also get some additional vitamin D that will be in your prenatals and in foods that you eat (fish, fortified milk etc.). You can also get plenty of vitamin D by going outside with bare arms and face (no sunscreen) for 15-20 minutes a day and your body will naturally produce a good amount of vitamin D. This is a little hard to do in the coldest months of the year though.

Vitamin D is a benefit to the baby too:

Also- FYI- You can get you and your family's blood tested to see if you are deficient in vitamin D or other nutrients. My Naturopath had me tested and I was not deficient in vitamin D (apparently many people are). I try to eat as much whole food as possible and since you like to cook very healthfully too, that will probably go a long way in protecting you and your family this winter.

I wish you and your family the best of health!

Hi Crystal --

Your Prenatal with 4000 IU Vit D is a good start for you and baby. The recommendation is 6000 IU of Vit D - you can ask for a simple blood test to check you're getting enough.

As for your kids, Flinstones vitamins, are loaded with artificial ingredients. I prefer we take supplements w/o artificial ingredients and a good amount of Vit D. New research indicates kids should get about 1000 IU - not all of which should come from from a supplement. http://tinyurl.com/oqxsna

I watched the same episode. He said 1000mg of Vitamin D. I'm not sure about being pregnant how much but I would think at least 1000mg also. Whatever the mg is for your supplement plus the 400 in your prenatal you should be good.
I watched because my husband catches everything we have and has it 10x worse than us.

Crystal, my vit. D was low for one of my pregnancies and instead of taking supplement, I called my midwife and asked her what natural thing I can do to increase my vit.D and she told me foods that are high in Vit. D. I even googled it and check it out for yourself and my vit.D increased. I don't like taking extras of things if I can do it by foods, natural things.
The vitamin I have been taking and I have the two older ones take it, it's terrific, my opinion, and they have not gotton sick since. It's from EcoQuest International and to be honest, no vitamin, etc. from stores sucks. You pee it out and lucky if it gets to where it's needed, whereas the ones I take, if I don't take them and miss a couple of days and try just Vitamin C, I don't feel well and begin getting colds or whatever. So, I stick with the vitamins I take daily and it's definitely gets to where it's needed. Flintstone vitamins won't be much good and it's all sugar...but again, my opinions and it's up to you. Hope this helped

Hi Crystal,
Congratulations, a third on the way! I too am a mom of 3... You are right in considering adding Vitamin D supplements to the family's diet, there is much new research on the benefits & the recommended daily intake has been increased to 600IU. When looking for supplements it is important to choose one that is natural, free of artificial colors, sugars, dyes, and fillers. Unfortunately there aren't many out there (Flinstones is not one).
We use Shaklee supplements they are safe & pure! http://healthtoday.myshaklee.com/us/en/category.php?main_...
Your prenatal vitamins are very important for you and baby as well. If you have any questions or want to share ideas please feel free to email me directly ____@____.com of health,
