The 50,000iu dosage is typical under supervision. Cholcalciferol (D3) is the preferred form that the body best utilizes. D2 is questionable as far as absorption which might be why the dosage is so high.
Even though my blood test results came in at the normal range. The endocrinologist gave me a RX for 50,000IU of Vit D2 to take once a week for the next 3-4 months. Has anyone ever taken this much of a dosage before. I was taking 2,000 Vit D3 per day and the doc said, "If you're taking that much and your still in the low normal range, the vitamin brand is not that good. You need Rx one."
Also I was told that you need D2 for D3 to "work"...is that correct? I appreciate the help/info. Thanks !

Yes, I've been on that high of a doseage (Rx) and at one point he put me on it twice weekly. Mine is that green gel-like pill, not sure what the D2 and D3 is about, I'll have to look into that. I've just been told to not get pregnant while on it and have the dr monitor you. But I just noticed you said your blood work was in the normal range, that I would question why he'd give you such a high doseage. Sorry I'm not much help...but I do take that high VitD.
I have taken the Rx D 50,000. Personally, I did not feel comfortable with that much at once. I took a couple but stopped.
It seemed like way too much. Also, my insurance did not cover the Rx because "Vitamins are something you can purchase over the counter". I think my 5 pills were $50. Not an issue if it is something I really need but I also did not feel completely comfy with the endocrinologist so I did not follow through.
I take a liquid D from the Vitamin Shoppe and don't over do it. My body does not absorb vitamins well and I have been instructed to take liquid D and the slow release B-12's that melt under your tongue.
I don't know what your doctor is talking about with regard to D2. You really shouldn't take that form. The best form of vitamin D is D3 in liquid form. If you are in the low normal range, you probably do need to take more for awhile, but I would just buy your own. Optimal levels are really around 60, give or take a little. I highly recommend taking Carlson vitamin D3 soft gels. I get them at a low cost from www.vitacost.com. I had to take 10,000 IU a day for about 6 mos. to reach optimal levels and now I take 4,000 IU a day. Hope this helps!
