Visiting Kansas City - Looking for Family Fun Things to Do!

Hello,
We are planning a trip to KC. After doing some looking around we saw things like Worlds of Fun, Oceans of Fun, etc. We aren't exactly sure when we will be going - though probably sometime in May. This means that the water park might not be open during our visit. We would love to find a nice hotel where our kids could swim around a little bit each day.

Would you recommend the great wolf lodge or coco keys...or maybe just a whole different hotel all together? We would really like to find a hotel with an indoor pool.

Our kids will be 7 and under during our trip - any suggestions of fun places to visit during our stay would be great!

Kansas City has a nice zoo, if I remember correctly. It has been several years since I've been there. Also, the Country Club Plaza is a nice place to walk, shop, eat and people watch (it's just called "the plaza" by the natives there). Kansas City is also known for their fountains. It's worth the time to find them and enjoy them. There are several on the plaza.

Another thought is a place called Kaleidoscope (sp), part of Hallmark cards. I know they used to have a place where kids can imagine and create things...sort of arts and crafts like. Kansas City Northern Railroad has or used to have good things for kids who like trains, including a short train ride for not much $$...less than a dollar, it seems like.

There are some nice parks for picnicing and playing. There's likely one near wherever you choose to stay. PM me closer to time when you know where you'll be staying and I'll send you some other info.

Definetly Great Wolf over CoCo Key. There is also a T-Rex restaurant not too far from the Great Wolf Lodge. If you are going to stay at GWL, you may want to google "Moon Marble". It's a fun little dive of a store with interesting toys and you can watch the employees make marbles.

Don't miss the Deana Rose Farmstead- take a picnic and plan to stay for the afternoon.

Crown Center is also fun. Have a wonderful time in Kansas City! It's a great place to visit AND live!

Great Wolfe Lodge is in a better area (more to do in terms of shopping) and much nicer, but also a much higher price tag. Coco Keys isn't horrible so I'd say it depends on your budget. Coco Keys is also closer to downtown KC and the Worlds of Fun/ Oceans of Fun area. Great Wolfe is a little further out. We've done Coco Keys just for the water park and my daughter LOVES it. We go on snow days. :o) Definitely plan a day in the Crown Center area...you can walk over to Union Station to see the trains, there's always stuff going on at Crown Center (movies, play, puppet shows, theater, etc.), visit the Hallmark visitors center (stop at the desk on the way out for a free gift) and Kalaidoscope (also free and a blast). Fritz's for lunch to have a train "drop off" your burger. Lots to do. Go to kcparent.com for a calendar of events and lots of family friendly things to do. Someone else suggested Deanna Rose, that's a lot of fun, but may be a little young for your 7 year old. Shatto Milk Dairy is sort of neat too.

Deanna Rose is awesome! And inexpensive. My cousin went to Coco Keys and didn't like it very much, but my aunt's friends are always coming up for a night at Great Wolf Lodge. My kiddo (4) is perfectly happy to visit grandma and grandpa at the regular old Comfort Inn and swim in their pool, that's a treat for her.

The zoo here is not as awesome as, say, the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, but the new Polar Bear is very entertaining, if your kiddos like zoos.

We recently went to the Toy and Miniature Museum when some friends came up and it was so cool! Even my 4 year old was fascinated by all of the neat old dollhouses and miniatures. And they have a big room full of Barbie. It's look but don't touch, so she didn't really want to examine things like we did, but she still enjoyed it.

If your kids like museums, the Nelson-Atkins is awesome and free, lots of fun paintings and art, and all you have to pay for is parking.

Everyone has made wonderful suggestions on here. If you stay near the Great Wolf Lodge, they have lots of restaurants and shopping in that area, it is called "The Legends" you can google that. There is the Kansas Speedway right there. A lot of folks have suggested "The Plaza" to you as well. Although it has been a terrific place to go for years, I want to warn you that there has been a lot of bad stuff happening there lately. A lot of young gang kids have started trying to run the streets and cause trouble, and a few weeks ago, 3 people were shot there, and they Mayor was even in the middle of it, if you can believe that. We as a family have decided to not go there anymore, so I wanted to let you know about that. There is also a new Schlitterbahn that opened up right at The Legends too. They do not have all of their rides completed just yet, but they might my May. I have heard it is great and you can take food in if you want. My son went to CoCo Key with a friend and stayed all weekend, and it was great for that too. Good luck on your plans, hope you have a great time! I would google everything you can to make sure you stay in a good area.
