Virus Protection for the Computer.

I'm so glad when I read other mom's suggestions before I put mine in. I learn so much! I'd definitely suggest you download the free anti-spyware program that the others recommended. I just had to remove malware from my computer. It must have gotten loaded from something my kids downloaded without my permission. Ironically, it was called "Malware-Alarm" and it just opened and started scanning files on it's own, mascarading as a real demonstration version of a legitimate program. I knew better, but those things can be tricky to get rid of. And I have anti-spyware software! I had to go to Microsoft's site for removal instructions.

Hi: I had been a user of Nortons and liked it, but it takes up too much memory. I have used several free programs that are VERY good.

FYI, you are to use only one virus program and one personal firewall on your computer, because if you have more than one they will not work very well in protecting you.

You may use several malware/adware programs, because sometimes one will get more adware/malware than another.

Virus Program: AVG (www.grisoft.com). Great virus program, been using it for years, in my opinion works just as good as Nortons and McAfee.

Personal Firewall: Zonealarm (www.zonealarm.com). I also heard that PCTools makes a good personal firewall..they've been around for years.

Adware/Spyware: Lavasoft (www.lavasoft.com), Superantispyware (www.superantispyware.com)<---this program got rid of a hijacker malware that none of the other programs were able to do. There are some people who even add a third.

Also...FYI, go to www.downloads.com where you will find a whole lot of free software and/or shareware that you can download. All the above info is listed on that website.

We have Norton Internet Security going on 2yr now and I have never had any issues or any virus.

Go to the website Overstock.com and buy whatever software you want at a discount. There is always someone selling at a discount or the company itself overbuys products :either way you get it @ a discount from what you buy it off the shelf for... The shipping is only $2.95 no matter how many things you purchase. Beware of getting HOOKED :) I shop on it all the time!!!!!!!

I have at&t to get on the internet I was having some problems with my email and I talked to a tech he told me he had kids and had to save money also he used Blackice security I haven't looked into it but I use Bit Defender I surf the web and just get emails so that's all I need and it's free. The tech told me Blackice had free security also. I understand and I don't do lots of downloads and stuff so I am pretty safe according to the tech I talked to.

You don't have to have Spysweeper on your computer to protect it, but it is added protection. I believe that Norton is an excellent virus protection program and that is the major protection you need.

Norton is all we have and it works just fine. I say just one.

Hi, M., you can get Ad-Aware free. Go to www.lavasoftusa.com or just search Ad-Aware free and you can download this. It was recommended to me by a Dell Technician and I used this along with my virus protection. You have to do your scans manually with the free version rather than being able to schedule it done automatically, but that didn't bother me. I actually preferred it that way. Hope this helps.

I have never had any other spyware remover other than Lava Soft's Ad-Aware. It works great and it's free. When your Norton subscription expires, you may want to try AVG, it is free also and it is awesome. D.

I was facing this delimea as well & a IT Specialist who is also a very close friend recommended AVG. He said he uses it on his. There is also another free program for spyware blocking, scanning & ridding the viruses &/or spy ware detection. 1st one ____@____.com & the other is PC TOOLS spywear blocking. Usually Norton covers really well. I would definitely depend on Norton the most.

Avast is free, and it's what all the computer geeks use. :)

We use Trend Micro Internet Securities (which would be like your Norton) and spyware doctor. These were both recomended by my computer guy who said they were to best rated products out there. You can get a 3 user on the TM for only 40 bucks which you can split with anyone. And no you don't have to have both. However, both always find things...usually always spyware...when they search weekly.

I used to have Norton, but it's such a memory hog. I went to pretty much a computer geek site and most computer geeks don't pay for their virus software or spyware, etc. I have the free stuff on my computer. I'll direct you to the website that I was on. They'll even help with problems too. It's really neat. Anyway, I have Ad-Adware as well as AVG Antivirus (free edition). They do have an edition that you can pay for, and if I did pay for one, it would be AVG because it's not such a memory hog as Norton.

You can go to http://www.greyknight17.com/bb/index.php for the KRC forum and find all different kinds of links that take you to some free software that you can use on your computer to clean up, virus protection, spyware, etc. There are links that you can click on that is in the blue writing box: things like "Anti-spyware Section" or "Windows Tips",etc
