Video Camera Recommendations?

Really need a new video camera asap, mine is the old model that uses the 8mm tapes, a pain to convert to dvds, and I also have to slap it around quite a bit to keep it working. Now more often than not it won't work.

Anyone have one they really like (and why)? Or, any to stay away from?

Also, related question, I searched Mamapedia as I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, but is there a way to sort the questions from newest to oldest? It doesn't help me really to have this same question from 4 years ago ;-)

Thanks!

ETA: I just got a new phone so it will be 2 years before I could get an iphone if I chose to go that route. Looking for long videos, not short snippets, easily transferrable to DVD.

What can I do next?

We have a Sony CX160 (a year old, so they probably have a different one out now) that is awesome. It is super small and light, and has great video quality. I also like that it has internal memory (16mb) and I can also put in an SD card for added space. It fell off the back of our car (we were videoing and the mount wasn't quite right) going about 30 mph, it now has some damage (a bit squished on one side beside the lens, not sure how that didn't break), but it still works and the video looks just as good as before. Most video cameras couldn't do that.

I also know that the GoPro is supposed to be awesome. My husband just got one at work, and now I want one because it is waterproof in its case. That is more for action videos, not sure how it would be for just holding like a video camera (it is pretty small), normally you would probably mount it.

Look at reviews for the cameras in your price range or suggested by others, that is really the best way to find out if a product has consistent quality.

You can get really good ones now for around $350-400. Are you looking to do long videos or short snippets? Because honestly we don't use our video camera anymore. We just use our phones. Oh and we have a FlipHD, which is a tiny handheld videorecorder. It's around $200, I think and is really easy to use. Good luck!

Iphone.

Seriously.

We own a semi-expensive camera/video camera that is pocket sized and records in HD. Also have iphones.

Rarely remember to grab the camera for whatever event, but that dang iphone is always there! Takes good pics/vids - also in HD.

I have a Nikon S8100 digital camera. I think you can buy it for around $200 these days. It is small enough to fit in my purse. It is a plain digital camera, but it also takes HD video. The quality of video is so much better than the $700 video camera we bought my FIL just four years ago. I don't know too many people who use video camera's any more unless they are serious videographers. They are just too bulky and aren't very practical.

I agree with Dad on Purpose about the iPhone. The video quality is great, and since it is your phone, you will have it with you always. I'm saving my pennies for one and trying to find room in our budget for a data plan :-)
