Very Small 15 Month Old Won't Eat

My son is now 15 months old. His doctor diagnosed him as failure to thrive. He only weighs 18 lbs. he looks like he has lost weight since the last time we had him weighed about a month and a half ago. I can see his ribs. Everyone thinks he is 9 months. He only drinks pediasure all day and will occasionally eat a very small piece of meat or a few chips or fries but for the most part doesnt eat much. His doc has done all types of test and they all came back negative. i don't want to subject him to anymore torture. His doc said he is at a loss and doesnt know what now. this is something that should never be said to a worrying parent so now I am in the process of looking for another pediatrician because that statement did not sit well with me. Any suggestions for my baby boy or a new doctor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I know your pain my daughter is 4 mnths old and stop eating all together, we took her to the er they admitted her to the hospital and she stayed 16 days . We had every test done I think possible MRI of brain ,cystic fibrosis , ph probe for reflux, swallow study, Gi scope with biopsies for milk allergies and reflux, upper Gi with small bowl follow thru and everything was normal. We were seen by Gi dr's, speech and nutritionist all had no answers. My daughter to was diagnosed with failure to thrive due to her eating aversion. We ended up having to have a feeding tube put in her stomach until we either come across the reason or she grows out of it. I would suggest you go see a Gi doctor and also contact eci in your area they have all kinds of services they provide and are most the time free or at a reduced fee depending on your income and how many in the family, but they only take kids up to three and they are great. They come out once a week for me to my home and bring a nutrionist and weigh measure her. My daughter was 6lbs at birth and I delivered at 38 weeks when we went in the hospital at the end of august she was 8lbs 10oz now she is 11lbs. I know if I hadn't pushed the doctore in the hospital to due what they did my daughter would not have made it. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions don't feel like you are alone. It is very hard when you know something is wrong but nobody can find out what.###-###-####

Hi there! Does he have any kind of reflux issues? My son has had severe reflux since he was very little, and eating- well not eating is a major problem for us. He is very texture oriented, and he will love something one day and hate it the next, and on and on... it is so hard to handle! We will be going to see a nutritionist soon, and I think that would be my suggestion for your son. I also think a lot of it is trial and error to see what they will/ will not eat, but I also think sometimes, especially being diagnosed "failure to thrive" we need to go ahead and seek out some more specialized care for them.

Your basic pedi may not be able to help with Failure to Thrive. I would check out Our Children's House for help. I know when I worked there they had therapists that had experience working with this....there is one in Allen.
