Very Odd Eye Roll

Hi,
My 21 month old son has this very odd eye roll that has been happening ever since birth. At first I just thought it was his eye muscles getting coordinated as he was a month premature. It still happens. He will just stop, sort of raise his head, and both eyes will roll up and to the left almost to where you can't see them. It doesn't happen on a regular basis. When it does happen it seems to happen at various times within a series of days. Then we won't see it for awhile. We happened to catch it on tape and will be going into the doc to talk about it this afternoon. It disturbs me to no end. Has anyone else seen this in their child and if so, do you have an answer as to what it is?

So What Happened?

Well we just got back from the pediatrician and she got the video. We will be going in for an MRI and EEG. We also have to get a second opinion from a pediatric neurologist. I wish it was a party trick but it's not that. Thank you for your input.

10/16/07 Thank you all so much. We do think it's seizures. We had our MRI yesterday and are still waiting on the EEG. We'll meet with a neurologist on the 31st.

This sounds very familliar. My own mother told me that, that kind of eye rolling was what clued her in that I may be having a sezier. It turned out I have epilepsy of all kinds. Grand mal, petty mal, silent, as well as narcoleptic seziers where I would just pass out asleep. Don't panic to much. Just go get it checked out. Many people grow out of it. And even if they don't, they still can lead happy productive normal lives. I graduated from the highest level in my high school, and would have gone on to college if we could have afforded it. Your son can as well. Who knowes... it may not be epelepsy at all. Let me know how this all turns out. L. T

My youngest sister did this (she is 5 now) and it freaked us all out! She would roll her eyes all the way back in her head, from 2 weeks old on! Years later, we swear it was just attitude, and she can still do this little trick when she wants to get a reaction. Point being, it may just be his party trick, so don't worry if you don't have to.

It could be a number of things ranging from just a habit, to something serious. So definitely go have it checked, just incase. My son had this weird ocassional head tick for awhile that totally freaked me out. It turned out to just be a weird habit. He only did for a month and we havent seen it since he was 1, thank god.
Anyway,go have it checked so you can rule out anything serious. It could just be an eyelash as kids always have such long eyelashes. Or his vision could be slightly impaired and he hasnt figured out to squint yet.
It must be weird seeing it on tape though, and it will certainly freak you out...especially if you keep rewinding it to look at and try to analyze. Have you looked on the Internet and googled " symptom eye roll toddler"?
At least you can do a little research on your own until you see the Dr.

My 6 month old son was in a bad car wreck in April and when I got him out of the car his eyes were rolling in the back of his head and it scared me to death, so I can imagine how you are freaked out by this, not knowing what is causing it. It may be nothing, but it sure sounds like it could be something. We saw Dr. David Weakley at Children's Medical for a Pediatric Opthalmalogist and Dr. Sperry at the Medical Center at 635 and Forest Lane is a good Pediatric Neurologist if it comes to that. Good luck to you!

I'm glad your Dr. has referred you to a specialist. I had the hardest time convincing my son's Dr. that something was wrong with his eyes since birth. He is 6 now and has had two eye muscle surgeries. If you need a Pediatric Opthalmologist I highly recomend Dr. George Beauchamp. He is located in Grapevine and his number is ###-###-####. Best wishes for you and your son.

I would be sure that you get your son in ASAP to someone - it sounds like it could be a seizure. I would get him looked at by a neurologist as quickly as possible. Good luck and keep us posted on his condition. I will pray for you all.
