HI All,
Before anyone asks, I'm seeing not one, not 2, but 3 doctors to try to figure out what is wrong. But they aren't coming up with anything so I thought - let's ask Mamapedia, see if anyone here has anything similar.

I've been having totally unpredictable, unexplainable vertigo. Sometimes it only lasts a few seconds, sometimes it lasts hours. Meclizine helps (AKA bonine, antivert). But those basically cover up the symptoms and don't address the underlying problem.

So far, we've ruled out MS, brain tumor, and blood sugar issues. One dr thought I might have Meniere's disease, but then another said no. My symptoms are that I feel very dizzy, lightheaded, and nauseous. If I don't lie down right away, the nausea becomes debilitating. I've been keeping a food diary, but I can't find a specific food trigger.

Has anyone out there had something similar, and is there anything that you can do that helps?

I had a problem like this when I stopped taking a multivitamin with iron and was taking one without iron for several months. My symptoms stopped shortly after I had gone back onto a multivitamin with iron when my doctor suggested that I might be anemic.

Diane:

Vestibular Neuritis - especially if the Meclizine works fast for you - the hairs in your inner ear get messed up and cause dizziness.

Meneires Disease. This is what I have. My symptoms happen infrequently. I went two years without any dizziness. There is no "cure" for it. I can't ride roller coasters any more. This sucks because I LOVE roller coasters.

have they checked you for any autoimmune disease or iron anemia? have they don the balloon test in your ears? Where they insert a small balloon into your ear canal and fill it with water - it's BIZARRE!!! My right ear is normal. My left ear - whacked up. Johns Hopkins can't even understand the extreme difference between my ears.

Do you have ringing in your ears? AKA tinnitus. I only get it in my left ear. My left ear feels the pressure (fullness) as well. This is also where my lymph node is swollen.

Mine started out as Vertigo then it ended up causing me anxiety. I went to Dr. after Dr. and got tested for MS. I am just now fully recovered after 2 1/2 years and lots of therapy. It has been a nightmare, I thought for sure I was dying since it just came on. Keep in mind it did start as actual vertigo/inner ear infection it got better after antibiotics but there was so muc stress due to neighbors that caused old issues to come up (which never gave me anxiety before). I would advise you to talk with someone I actually felt better after 2 sessions with my former therapist. Also I had stopped well actually forgot to use my Natural Progesterone cream for a while and once I got back on that and trippled the amount I was using for a while I felt the difference. Good Luck and I feel for you. (PS MSG causes me to have the same symptoms check the places you are eating and the foods they disguise the name look it up on the internet)

My husband had/has very high iron levels and was experiencing unexplained vertigo. 3+ doctors still cannnot tell him why he is having it. Since we have had the blood work done we have been working to bring the iron levels down. The only thing that seems to stop the vertigo is going gluten free. Once we changed his diet to that the dizziness has stopped. Maybe try going gluten free and see if that helps since you don't have an iron problem.

I get BPPV. The little crystals in my ear canal get loose and I feel dizzy until they dissolve or I can get them into a position where they don't affect my balance.

The first time I experienced vertigo was in my teens. It lasted for days. It hits unexpectedly and lasts from 1 day to weeks. There are some physical therapy exercises you can do to relocate the crystals. It's worked well for me:

I have episodes of vertigo pretty frequently, and was hospitalized with it several years ago when I was first diagnosed. That episode lasted 4 days. Last night I had a bad episode with it, and had to take nausea and pain (for migraine) meds and go to bed. I couldn't stand up without holding onto something because the vertigo was so bad, but this morning I was fine.

My vertigo issues seem to be related to anemia and migraines. The worst vertigo episodes I have, like last night, occur in conjunction with migraines, but sometimes I have problems with vertigo whenever I'm not having a migraine. Doctors aren't sure what's causing it, but I'm anemic, so they think that may be the problem. Most of the time I'm just off balance for 30 seconds or so, and then I'm fine unless I'm having a migraine.

I hope you find a solution to your vertigo.

I have very infrequent, very short duration vertigo. I will be walking along and all of a sudden I will feel "woozy" for a few seconds, long enough that I have to grab hold of something, but no other lasting effects beyond a few minutes of feeling lightheaded after the severe dizziness. I have been checked for various things but nothing found. I do also get occular migraines - where I see a halo effect (more like a tiny neon worm in my vision that I cannot blink away) that lasts up to 30 minutes max, but has no headache after it. Both the eye doctor and the primary care seem to think I may become dehydrated easy and recommend I make sure to drink lots of liquids. Since both happen infrequently and not related to each other, I have not found any correlations.
Your symptoms sound a lot more serious since you have to lay down.
A friend of mine consulted many doctors and neuropaths and homeopaths for YEARS since she was losing weight at an alarming rate to the point of needing intravenous night feedings. She checked herself into Mayo clinic at one point, and finally arranged for about 3 of the doctors to speak on a conference call. Turned out she had a weak stomach muscle that did not digest her food fully, causing less absorption, then leakage of undigested food via the intestinal wall into her bloodstream causing allergies to anything she ate a few days later. A simple pill-a-day to help her stomach contract more effectively has cured all her symptoms and she has gained back her normal weight. So do not give up, if it is something you cannot live with, keep digging. Doctors do not know it all but you know yourself best.

Let me guess, because you are possibly under 40, no doctor has checked your hormones levels? I say that because too often, doctors ASSUME, because a woman is under a certain age, they don't have to check hormones. I mention hormones, because at the age of about 39ish I began to have bouts of Vertigo .. This, out of the blue.. Having NEVER had it before, I chalked it up to STRESS (which definitely doesn't help matters) later on and with no help from doctors, I began to read up on matters and found that in my case, it would seem that the severe fluctuations in Estrogen/Progesterone ratios (which I knew had happen because I did happen to have a hormone test for other reasons) might well be the culprit. While I don't have the Vertigo like I once did, even just a few days go when my my Estrogen dropped off (I track my monthly cycles) I did have a dizzy spell....
Again, the highs and lows of hormones can cause such problems..

I would definitely suggest that someone do a hormone check... Also, go online and check out Dr. Vliet. .she has done a GREAT deal of hormone research and has had so many patients come to her after no other doctors could figure something out. Again, could be the hormones.. if insurance pays, why not have them run some blood work... Also, while nothing out of the norm might appear , I think it also depends when in your cycle you do the test. e.g. could be right before your period, you may notice even more dizziness? it's worth looking into..

also, check out this link. it's from 2007... the info is still good...

I had my first case of vertigo back in 1997 and it was crippling, even laying down had me vomiting from dizziness. I was given antivert and antibiotics and it went away in about a week.

About 4yrs later, I started getting it on/off in a milder form. My doctor said that my ears weren't draining properly and gave me instructions on what to do every night until the vertigo stopped, then again whenever it returned. Sitting on a couch, I was to quickly fall to the right and lay on my side until the spinning stopped, then quickly fall to the left and lay on my side untl the spinning stopped. 10 repetitions, each side. At first, it took at least 10 days to really go away, but going forward, the sooner I started, the sooner it would stop.

Once I started going to the chiropractor on a regular basis, I stopped having vertigo on a regular basis and only got it a few times when I had an ear/sinus infection.

Good luck!

I had this happen to me last August. It lasted about 3 weeks and then went away. I did nothing for it. I read you can get an infection/virus that affects your inner ear if you get a cold. A friend's husband got vertigo really bad this year - for about 3 months. He saw a physical therapist for it...they had him lie a certain way a few times a day and it really helped. Then it went away on it's own.

I had similar symptoms as yours for over a year. The ENT I saw diagnosed me with Meiner's as well. I now believe that I had some sort of inner ear imbalance because I would feel a weird sensation in my ears - kind of like they needed to drain, but nothing would come out. Anyway, lots of testing and about a whole year later, I got better. Aside from over the counter, anti-nausea meds, I was never prescribe anything. I pray that you get relief from your symptoms and that they will subside.
